Education experts slam carine senior high school’s plan to offer students $500 cash incentives, carine senior high school year 12s offered cash incentives for good atar.
Education experts have slammed a top-ranking WA public school's decision to use taxpayers’ money to give Year 12 students $500 cash incentives to work harder as “lazy”.
Former principal and Real Schools chief executive office Adam Voigt said Carine Senior High School’s results sweetener "flies in the face of what schools should focus on" and warned it could lead to students taking "unnecessary shortcuts".
In an email sent to staff late yesterday and leaked to The West Australian it was revealed principal Damian Shuttleworth, the 2018 WA Secondary Principal of the Year, wanted to give pupils who had a predicted ATAR of 80 or above in Year 11 last year $500 in cash if they maintained or improved on that result in Year 12.
However, Mr Voight said the program had the potential to set them up for failure and that the investment should be directed into ensuring teachers were well equipped to help students achieve results.

"One of my, I guess, deep beliefs is that schools should be a place where we try things that are new and different and see what works but I just cannot find an idea, a bit of research [or] a bit of science that says that this is in any way a good idea," he said.
"As much as I really do want to support every school that tries something different - it's lazy of the school.
"It flies in the face of the way intensive rewards work, it flies in the face of what schools should be focusing on in terms of motivating students because that's a great teacher. What we know motivates young people to do well at school is having a great teacher.
"I just can't see a way that this school is going to get anything better than a really short term spike or a bunch of Year 11’s that are trying to do badly next year on their predicted ATAR so that they don't have to try so hard in Year 12.
"It's letting them know that only behaviours worth performing are those they get a carrot for - that's not the way the world works, that's not the way success works."
Education Department deputy director-general Stephen Baxter said public schools should not “appropriate funds to have cash incentives” for students who should be “intrinsically motivated” to work hard.
Speaking to The West Live host Jenna Clarke, the top Education Department official confirmed Carine Senior High School’s plan had now been killed off.
"The notion of class incentivisation - the department won't support," he said.
Mr Baxter said he had known Mr Shuttleworth for a number of years and labelled him an "outstanding leader" but said his move to hand out cash didn’t stack up.
Rather than offering cash incentives, Mr Baxter said it would be more appropriate for schools to consider bringing in tutors to support struggling students or offering extra classes.
In his email to staff, Mr Shuttleworth said he feared some students at the school — ranked 10th in The West’s Top 50 Schools last year — had been affected by the “potential disengagement” experienced by ATAR students with unconditional university offers.
I just cannot find an idea, a bit of research [or] a bit of science that says that this is in any way a good idea. It's lazy of the school.
The school had surveyed students after declining results and feedback from teachers showed extra support and strategies were needed to help Year 12s maintain focus and motivation. Most of those surveyed said a reward would help them work hard for the rest of Year 12.
Education Minister Sue Ellery said the Carine principal’s proposal had been “well-intentioned” but would not go ahead.
“We don’t pay students to do their school work so it's not going to proceed,” she told 6PR.
"I do think we need to find other ways than giving kids cash to motivate them to continue to work hard in Year 12.
"What are the best ways to motivate our senior students to stay engaged right up to the end of their schooling? This is a conversation I want to have.”
