For the past four weeks, I have been assigning one teacher 'assigned lesson' to my students through the iReady Math program.

I realized that I could use the iReady Math program to offer further support for my students of skills I teach in class that need further reinforcement.  And I could also use the iReady Math program to give students some exposure to skills I have not taught that may be easy to 'quickly' learn on their own ahead of CAASPP.

I choose my lessons carefully so that I am supporting students and not supplanting the purpose of what iReady Math was intended for by the District.  I first preview the iReady Math Lesson by taking the quiz associated with the lesson to ensure that the lesson is not covering something that will be to difficult.  I then assign it to my classes.  And then I verify that a student has not already passed the lesson - if they have, then I unassign it to them.

Use Teacher Assigned i-Ready Lessons as Reinforced Differentiated Instruction

Sara Klimek, a seventh grade ELA Academic Intervention Service teacher, uses teacher assigned lessons in  i-Ready Online Instruction to supplement her own teaching and meet all of her students' needs. Sara explains, "Teachers often ask me how to use i-Ready in the classroom in a way other than its diagnostic usage. Here's what I tell them: i-Ready is a great way to reinforce what you are already doing. As teachers, it's difficult to differentiate instruction. I teach Academic Intervention Service for ELA Grade 7. I have students who read on grade level and students who read four grades below level. To best meet their needs (because it's all about them, the students!), I use i-Ready to back up what I taught them. For example, if I just finished teaching about "point of view" using a gradual-release method (I do, We do, You do), the next class I would have the students log in to i-Ready Reading, where they would each have a point of view lesson assigned to them based on their reading level. Our instruction in class on day one was for the most part semi-differentiated, but the follow-up lesson is specifically catered to each student's needs. It is easy to assign lessons and takes minimal time out of our busy schedules. Each student will take a quiz via  i-Ready , and that turns out to be a pretty fair grade because it is based on what their reading abilities currently are. Give it a try!"
