Kindergarten Spelling Worksheets

Kindergarteners are starting from scratch with their concepts for putting together words, let along, spelling them. A nice place to start is having students spell their own name and their best friend's name. From there, we usually start with words that are composed of two-letters (such as: at, am, it, and to). We then progress to three letter consonant-vowel-constant words (such as: cat, run, mop, and hot). It is always helpful for students to be able to see and say the words that they will be working with. These worksheets help kindergarten students identify with new words and work with them several times.
Kindergarten Spelling Worksheets To Print:
Spelling Practice - Which word matches the picture? Read the two words just above each picture. Circle the correct word, and then write it two times
Fill in the Blank - A single vowel goes a long one in this one. : Look at the picture. Fill in the blank with the correct vowel.
Vowel For A Loss - The last one does occasionally baffle some kids. You not only have to fill it, but you have to re-read it too.
Zoo Review - Say the name of the animal in each picture out loud. What vowel sound do you hear at the beginning of the word? Write the vowel on the line to complete the word.
Speak and Spell - It's a double word for you to write each time on the line. Read the two words under each picture. Circle the correct word, and then write it two times.
Fill in the Blank Spelling - Drop and pop in those missing vowels to complete each of the words. Use the pictures as a guide to which vowel completes each word.
Spelling Fun - Write each word on the line. Writing practice has been shown to improve spelling.
Circle the Correct Spelling - Circle the word that is spelled correctly. Then write it two times.
-ate Words - Fill in the last part of each of the words. It would also encourage you to complete the first letter of the spelling word.
Practice Me More - Pick a word that matches the picture above it and then write it.
Which One is Right? - The spellings that are provided might trick them a bit. Write the correctly spelled word on the lines.
More Spelling Practice - Writing words over and over have been shown to improve spelling skills.
Spelling Challenge - Remember to use the pictures as a marker. Step these out a bit.
Spelling with Word Shapes - Write each word below in the correct word shape box.
Word Shape - Word shape boxes really do help your ability to remember spellings and to sound out words.
How to Introduce Spelling to Kindergarteners
The biggest problem for spellers is holding on to spelling words in their memory. Normally this happens because students learn through techniques that involve sheer repetition. They have trouble holding on to a particular section of new vocabulary words longer than a week. Being a strong speller helps students become stronger and more confident writers. There is also some data to indicate that students that can spell well have an easier time understanding what they read.
When you are working with students you should try to stress that they understand the pronunciation and specifically the sounds within a word. Sounds are much more important to focus on rather than the letters themselves. If you can sound out a word, you can spell it in chucks. This is why students who learn to read through phonics are strong spellers. Phonics students have a great deal of experience sounding out words. Building off of this, is important to have students learn spelling words in word sets that have a similar sounding or spelling pattern. This makes it much easier for students to recognize difference between words. It is helpful to highlight or color the parts of the words that follow a similar pattern as well. I would also recommend that you have students do two things with new words that they are learning. Have students use the words in sentences to make sure they have the proper context for the word. I would also have students try to draw something that incorporates the word, this is a very helpful technique.

Kindergarten Activities
Help your Kindergarten student grow his knowledge of sight words by the following activities:
Online Spelling: Practice our kindergarten spelling lists by importing them into your account. They contain many sight words that will help your student become more familiar with these common words.
Target Practice: Go to the library and get books with common sight words. Get stickers from an office supply store that are designed to be taken off (the stickers that are used to mark signature locations). Then work with your child to put arrows in the book on common sight words. This is a fun activity that helps with word recognition.
Memory Game: Get some index cards and write down some sight words in pairs. Then put them on the floor face down and flip two cards over at a time until you find matches. This game helps with word recognition and it’s something you can do as a family too!
Rhyme Game: Take a common ending like “un” and add consonants to the beginning. First, create a flash card deck of letters a-z using index cards. Then on another card write endings like “un” or “oat” etc. Then start trying consonants in front of them. Help your child read the words as needed. As you find real words, keep score of how many your student found.
At the beginning of the week, you might sit down and have a team meeting about what you hope to accomplish this week with your student. This will help your child be a part of the learning process and learn planning and organizational skills as well as goal setting.
Special Note: It is helpful for your Kindergarten student to feel a sense of accomplishment. All of your activities should involve praise and parent / caregiver involvement. Some kids really like to have a sticker board on the refrigerator or somewhere in a public place where they can show how well they’ve done. Create a grid with game names, books read, practice times and award gold stars for your child to place on the board.
