A research paper can be made stronger through the use of quotations. You may use quotes when you need to cite a key piece of primary source material, strengthen your argument through another writer's work, or highlight a term of art. It is important to both use quotations effectively and cite them properly to write an effective paper and avoid plagiarizing.

Using Different Types of Quotes

- Use a complete sentence to incorporate a dropped quote. Ex: As Rembrandt’s skill developed, he began painting landscapes that are “romantic and visionary” (Wallace 96).
- Use a short phrase to incorporate a dropped quote: Rembrandt’s landscapes are “romantic and visionary” (Wallace 96).

- Use a complete sentence to introduce a full sentence quote. Ex: Over the course of time Rembrandt’s work began to change and focus on different themes, but as Wallace points out: "Rembrandt’s great gift as an etcher lay in preserving a sense of spontaneity while scrupulously attending to close detail” (142).
- Use a signal phrase to introduce your full sentence quote. Ex: As Wallace states, “Rembrandt’s great gift as an etcher lay in preserving a sense of spontaneity while scrupulously attending to close detail” (142).

- Introduce your block quote with a colon. Ex: According to Wallace: (add a line break here, and then indent the entire quote).
- Block quotes do not use quotation marks. You have already stated who the author is/what is being referred to in the introduction sentence. Add the in-text parenthetical citation after the period at the end of the quote, though.
- If your block quote is inside a paragraph, you don’t have to start a new paragraph at the end of it. Simply add another line break and begin writing along the left margin (with no indent). [4] X Research source However, you will need to indent the second paragraph by an extra 0.25 in (0.64 cm) if you are citing more than 1 paragraph. [5] X Trustworthy Source Purdue Online Writing Lab Trusted resource for writing and citation guidelines Go to source

- Change the structure of the sentence by moving clauses around. Aim to change at least half of the sentence into a new structure, but also make sure that the grammar is correct and the meaning of the sentence is still clear. You can use a thesaurus to exchange words with synonyms.
- Paraphrasing should only be done if you are certain that you understand the content you are copying. If you are unclear as to the meaning of the quote, you won’t be able to put it adequately into your own words.
- When you write your paraphrase, don’t look at the quote. Keep the meaning in your head and create a new sentence to match. [7] X Research source
Formatting Your Quotes

- To use a comma, you might structure the quote with in sentence like this: “Yogurt provides beneficial bacteria to your gut,” so it is good to include 1 serving per day in your diet.
- To use a period, you might structure the quote like this: “Carrots are a valuable source of vitamin A.”

- Example of a quotation that comes with a question mark: Alice said “but where will I go?” (24).
- Example of asking a question about a quotation: With so much contention, will literary scholars ever agree on “the dream-like quality of Alice’s adventure” (39)?
- Example of a question about a quoted question: At this point in the story, readers communally ask “but where will I go?” (24).

- Ellipses can be used in the center of a quote to leave out words that you feel add unnecessary length to the statement without adding value. For example: As the man stated, “reading the book was...enlightening and life-changing.” This is done rather than: As the man stated, “reading the book over the last few weeks was not only incredibly enjoyable, but also enlightening and life-changing.”
- Ellipses should be used only before or after a quote, not both. If you are only use a part of a quote from the center of a selection, it is just a partial or dropped quote. However, keep in mind that ellipses rarely come at the beginning of a quotation. [11] X Research source

- For example: As scholars have noted, “Rembrandt’s portrait of her [Henrickje, his mistress] was both accurate and emotion-filled” (Wallace 49).

- Ex: As Dormer has noted, “his work is much more valuable now then [sic] it was at the time of its creation.”
Quoting in Different Styles

- Ex: We can therefore ascertain that “Rembrandt’s decline in popularity may have been his dedication to Biblical painting” (Wallace 112).
- Ex: According to some, “another reason for Rembrandt’s decline in popularity may have been his dedication to Biblical painting” (Wallace 112), but not everyone agree on this matter.
- Ex: Wallace states that “another reason for Rembrandt’s decline in popularity may have been his dedication to Biblical painting” (112). [15] X Research source

- Ex: As Billy’s character is described, we learn “Billy wasn’t a Catholic, even though he grew up with a ghastly crucifix on his wall” (Vonnegut 1969).
- Ex: Vonnegut gives a factual statement with a clear opinion thrown in when he says “Billy wasn’t a Catholic, even though he grew up with a ghastly crucifix on his wall” (1969).
- Ex: With the knowledge that “Billy wasn’t a Catholic, even though he grew up with a ghastly crucifix on his wall” (Vonnegut 1969), we begin to understand his philosophical standings.

Community Q&A

- Keep a list of quotations as you take research notes, and star your favorites to return later. ⧼thumbs_response⧽ Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
- Watch for quotations that are quoted by other researchers again and again. Often secondary material will give you hints to finding the best parts of the primary sources. ⧼thumbs_response⧽ Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
- Quote the opposition so that you can directly pick apart their argument. It's easier to argue against someone if you're using exactly what they said and pointing out its flaws. Otherwise, the opposition can claim that you simply twisted their meaning. Rely on their words and attack directly. ⧼thumbs_response⧽ Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

- Don't let a research paper become a sea of he-said, she-said. While you want to set up the arguments that have been made on both sides in the past, you also want to make a compelling argument for yourself. Rephrasing, re-organizing an argument, and synthesizing different arguments in your own words makes it clear that you understand what you've researched and makes the paper interesting to read. The reader is searching for a new way to understand the research or a new idea. Too many quotes tend to bury the lead. ⧼thumbs_response⧽ Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0
- Don't rely too heavily on one source. It's easy to fall in love with a single book when doing research, particularly if there aren't a lot of books on the subject and one author particularly agrees with you. Try to limit how much you quote that author, particularly if a lot of your argument is relying on his or her groundwork already. Look for quotations that complement or challenge that person, and provide your own analysis. ⧼thumbs_response⧽ Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
- Don't be a sloppy note-taker. Unfortunately, accidental plagiarism is all too common, and it has serious consequences. You may not have meant to plagiarize, but if you write someone else's words down without indicating that you are using a direct quotation, you are plagiarizing whether it was intentional or not (after all, merely relying on lecture notes and not on your own research is lazy and not acknowledging direct quotes as you take notes from texts reflects poor organization). Always indicate quotations in your notes. It's also better to write down a lot of quotations and then paraphrase them later than to write down a paraphrased version. The danger here, particularly if you don't alter the quote much, is that you'll unwittingly change it back to the quotation later, in revision. It's better to have the original right in front of you. If you find yourself unable to choose better language, just quote it properly. ⧼thumbs_response⧽ Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

About This Article

To quote in a research paper in APA style, use in-text parenthetical citations at the end of quotes that have the author's last name and the year the text was published. If you mention the author's name in the sentence with the quote, just include the year the text was published in the citation. If you're citing a quote in MLA style, do the same thing you would for APA style, but use the page number instead of the year the text was published. Using Quotations in Your Research Papers

A well-placed quotation can make a big impact.
Quotations play a vital role in your research paper. But knowing how to use quotes appropriately is almost as important as using them in the first place. An incorrectly placed quote or too many quotes at once can lessen the impact. In this post, we talk about quotations in general and how you should use them in your research paper.
When should you use quotations?
To strengthen your argument: Quotations help establish your point. Relevant quotes by famous people or experts in your field can support the ideas you are putting across.
To showcase your research: Quotes are a great way to demonstrate that you have done research. So, if you come across a relevant quote while preparing for your paper, make a note of it and include it when writing the paper.
To add value to your paper: Using a well-written line with beautiful language can make a lasting impression on the reader.
How much is too much?
Regardless of their value, be careful when using quotations. Too many quotes give you less scope to highlight your own views and can make the paper less personal. A common tactic is using more quotes to reach the word limit, but professors may penalize students who quote excessively.
One view is that quotations should not occupy more than 20 per cent of your paper. After all, the paper should carry your signature and the focus should be on your understanding of the subject matter. If you blindly rely on quotes, your own views will get lost.
Using quotations properly
Keep to the limit of 20 per cent when using quotes. If you want to quote more, try paraphrasing the source text in your own words. This will give your paper credibility and show off your writing skills. Learn about the different ways of paraphrasing in this helpful guide .
Do not forget to identify the source though. Even a well-written paper that employs quotes effectively can land in a plagiarism row if the sources are not acknowledged properly. For each quote, make sure to name the author and the required publication details.
Quotations are very handy in helping your paper make a good impact. So keep these tips in mind and use quotes properly to get the best results.

Can I Use Quotes in a Research Paper
Quick Navigation
How to quote in a research paper
At first, you should understand what it means to write a research paper because without this knowledge you cannot create decent work.
A research paper is academic writing, which analyzes a perspective or argues a point. No matter what kind of research paper you are writing your finished work should present your own thinking backed up by others’ ideas and information.
Can you use quotes in a research paper and how to use them?
In order to make a research paper stronger, it is okay to add quotations when you need to cite a principal piece of primary source material, strengthen your argument with the help of another writer’s work, or highlight a term of art. It is very important to both use quotations effectively and cites them properly. In this case, you will write a successful paper and avoid plagiarizing.
There are several types of quotations. You can use many ways to present them as well as provide different kinds of quotes in your work.
For example, there are dropped quotes. These are particulate phrases taken from the middle of a piece of text. They should be introduced in a sentence, which will give an idea of the meaning because they cannot form their own sentence. Take a look at the examples:
Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings”( 263).
Romantic poetry is characterized by the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (Wordsworth 263).
These examples were taken from a book, so the numbers of the pages where they can be found are mentioned. Note that the first one has only the number of the page in brackets because the name of the author is used in a quote, while the other one has the name and the page in brackets for the reason it does not include the author in the quote.
So, you can see that if you cite an article, the most important is to use the author’s name. If it does not have the author’s name, you go to the title, if the title is not available use the name of the source you found it in.
The second type of quotations is called indirect. Basically, it means you will be paraphrasing. For instance:
Wordsworth extensively explored the role of emotions in the creative process (263).
You can see that here we do not use quotation marks, and it looks more like your own interpretation of what the author said. You still should mention the page, and give credit to the person. If you want to write a paraphrase, try not to look at the quotation, but keep in mind the idea and create your own sentence.
If you do not want to take breaks or change phrases, you may also use full or direct quotes:
“This fascinating guided tour provides an informative and detailed look at the park’s logistical, technical and operational sides. Included are the parade- assembly area, the waste-treatment plant, and the utilidor network beneath the park” (Sehlinger and Testa 703).
One more type of quotations is block quotes. This writing type may explain the typical question: “Can a research paper start with a quote?” This is a combination of sentences quoted straight from the source. They are usually pretty long and take plenty of space, that is why you do not want to have more than two of them in your paper. The example will look like this:
Scholar Michael Corinaldi makes a similar point about the history of Israel and the Ethiopians:
The Israeli government, however, made no attempt to include the Ethiopians in the waves of immigrants that arrived in Israel, and in some cases, Ethiopian Jews were forced to go hiding lest they are deported by the local authorities. This was based on their considerations of how Jewish the Ethiopians were and how easily they could adapt to their new environment (180).

Can a research paper start with a quote?
The introduction is the backbone of your argument. This is where you state your hypothesis. So, generally, it is better to start with your own words as of the author of the idea. You may ask then: “Can I start a research paper with a quote?” The answer is yes! Quotes serve the function of providing proof for claims made in your paper. In each supporting paragraph, you are going to have the main idea, and it should be supported by different claims that you are making, in your own words. Wherever it is possible, you want those claims to be supported by quotations or citations.
Can you open a research paper with a quote? There are pros and cons to starting off with something that belongs to someone else. It can lead the audience to expect something unoriginal so you really have to work to show why your ideas are either supported by the quote or can refute it – depending on your aims. If you decide to begin with a quote, better use indirect or paraphrased one. However, you should try to keep it light on quotations in the introductory paragraph; you want it to contain your voice as the author of your paper.
How to incorporate a quote
We have already answered the question Can you start a research paper with a quote but now we will understand how to do it correctly. Take a look at an example of how you can combine your writing with a quote:
Once entering the park, the Cinderella Castle is a heavenly and magical view for all Disney guests to see. Basking in its historical glory, many people are unaware that there are livable bedrooms at the top of the building. “Within Cinderella Castle is a lavish royal suite, built in the space originally intended for Walt and his family. It can’t be booked or even toured. It is currently available for VIPs, special guests and occasional contest winners” (“Magic Kingdom Secrets”).
Can I start my research paper with a quote? Well, following the example above, you primarily write your piece of thought and then you support it with the evidence right away. You can also use some more information and incorporate a quotation it in the following way:
Once entering the park, the Cinderella Castle is a heavenly and magical view for all Disney guests to see. Basking in its historical glory, many people are unaware that there are livable bedrooms at the top of the building. According to WDW Secrets, “within Cinderella Castle is a lavish royal suite, built in the space originally intended for Walt and his family. It can’t be booked or even toured. It is currently available for VIPs, special guests, and occasional contest winners.”
In this example, the name of the source is mentioned, so you do not need any additional information in brackets.
How to format quotes
You have already see how to incorporate quotes, but you still don’t know how to write the quotation properly, so here are the main concerns.
You should understand where to put commas and periods. If you use quotation without mentioning the source or author in the brackets (so-called parenthetical citation), you should put comma or period before the closing quotation mark. But if you use the parenthetical citation, they will go after it.
However, if the quotation ends with an exclamation point or a question mark, you will put them before the parenthetical citation. It may look like this:
You may wonder, “what is the purpose?” (25).
Note that you should put a period after parenthetical citation because then it means your quote is not complete and it is considered a mistake.
If you think the quote is too long, you can omit the text in the middle that you think is not useful, but be aware of showing that you dropped a part with ellipsis points:
“Walt designed the parks so when guests pass from land to land; they don’t see the others… Even the pavement changes to match the new [mood] land” (Walt Disney World Best Kept Secrets”).
The square brackets are the opposite of ellipsis; they help to give additional information, make some minor changes, that can only support the meaning not drastically change what the author meant. You can see in the example below.
The critics mention that “da Vinci’s portrait [Mona Lisa] is of unbelievable beauty” (38).
Do not change words when you are using a direct quote; the text should be exactly the same as in the source. If you want to paraphrase, avoid using quotation marks. Even if the quote has a mistake in it, still copy the full text and just insert [sic] after the wrong word. For example:
Walter implies that “David is much more hardworking then [sic] Calvin” (26).
Can a research paper end with a quote?
It is important to the conclusion, as well as an introduction, to be informative. Quotes are used to enrich your ideas, but they should not substitute them. As long as your conclusion is mainly about your argument, and what you demonstrated, and why it matters, then adding a quote, which is relevant to these themes, is totally fine. Although you should not finish the paragraph with somebody’s words, it will show that you could not come to the result on your own. A lot of aspects depend on the type of research work you are writing, but in order not to go wrong and make a mistake, better avoid using redundant quotations, just to stay safe.
Is it ok to end a research paper with a quote?
Do not oversaturate your text with quotes. Sometimes it may seem like a right choice, and you feel that the quotes will fit perfectly, but you had better use them to provide evidence, not to water down the writing. Remember, your paper should primarily contain your own words, to quote only the most concise and worth remembering parts of sources. There are different standards of how many quotes you can use in your work, but there should definitely be no more than 20 percent. The answer is: yes, you can end a research paper with a quote but bear in mind how to do this efficiently. Also you can write research paper with picture.
Give context to a quote. This is a typical mistake to use some author’s words and not to explain them. Sometimes the idea is only clear to you. A person who reads your paper does not have to work on understanding it; it is your job to analyze and provide a ready solution. Do not think that everyone will understand a quote because you do, always give some explanation.
Try to quote selectively, omit the parts that do not fit but do not forget ellipsis points.
Pay attention to the tense usage. It is not professional to jump from one tense to another, that is when a lot of mistakes are made.
Ask your supervisor about a style of quoting. There are APA, APSA, CBE, Chicago/Turabian, MLA, and Numbered References. The most commonly used is MLA, and it is presented here in the examples.
Be careful not to misquote. Sometimes you may find the words that suit just right and add another meaning to them, but it does not make your work correctly. Do not just take somebody’s expression from one context and put it into another, save the idea, select the quote carefully. If you did not find a relevant quote, better do not use any.

How to Quote in a Research Paper
ResearchArticles.com February 28, 2019 Citation , Research Writing Leave a comment 24,781 Views
How to quote in a research paper? Quotations and paraphrasing are two ways in which you can introduce a source in your research. Quotations are used primarily when the source explicitly explains what the researcher likes to say. The researcher uses a quote in a research when any changes made by paraphrasing the source would not be effective. This means that a quote in a research paper has a vital role but its use should be limited to where paraphrasing is not worth to do.
The are two important considerations in adding quotations in research: first one is related to how to write quotation in research; and second is related to how to cite quotations in research. The rules for writing a quotation in research is same among different systems of research citation. The rules for citing quotations are some what different among different citation systems.
How to write a quotation in research
The first and the most basic rule in writing a quotation is that you have to copy word to word the same material that you have read from the original author. The quotations can be a sentence or it can a long paragraph, the length of the quotation depends on how long you want to write it. The only consideration in deciding about the length of the quote is that it should be of value to your research. You should not add lengthy quotations when there is no need to do so. Write as long a quote as it meets the requirement of your research.
You have to cite the author’s last name, year of publication and page number in the text along with the quotation. The quotation marks should make the quotation well recognizable from your own words. In online sources where page number is not present you can write paragraph number or else omit it.
The quotation should be accurate and it should follow the wording, grammar, and punctuation of the actual writing. Check the actual source for each quotation to make sure there is not any mistake in copying the source.
Both in MLA and APA citations you should write a small quote that is less than 4 sentences long with in quotation marks. A short quote can appear within your own text but only separated by single or double quotation marks. On the other hand a long quotation should appear separately as a block that is indented from left. A long quote that is written separately as a block does not need a quotation mark. When there are more than one paragraphs to quote you can write the first paragraph half inch indented from the left, the first line of the second paragraph can be indented 1/4 inch more to show that it is a new paragraph.
How to cite a quotation in research
The citation of a quotation is done in the similar manner as the citation of paraphrasing. The in-text citation may include the author last name, year of publication, and page number. The reference list should provide a full citation of the source including all the publication information as well.
The use of long quotations in your work may need permission from the author or the owner of the work. In most cases in every copyright protected work a fair use of the work is allowed without taking permission from the author or publisher. The use of material more than that may require permission the author is responsible of asking permission and showing the proof of permission in the manuscript. The copyright permission of the use of a long quotation can be provided in the research paper as a footnote.

How To Use Direct Quotations In Research Papers
Posted by Rene Tetzner | Apr 15, 2021 | Referencing & Bibliographies | 0 |

How To Use Direct Quotations In Research Papers When an author directly quotes sources in scholarly writing, it is essential to enclose each quotation within quotation marks or set it off as a block quotation, and also to maintain appropriate and correct patterns of punctuation in every sentence that includes a quotation. Only if the quotations you use are properly punctuated will they be successfully integrated into your text and succeed in supporting your argument as you intend.
The punctuation that precedes a quotation is particularly important because such introductory punctuation helps determine the way in which readers approach and read that quotation within a piece of academic or scientific writing. In some cases, no punctuation at all is needed immediately before a quotation, whether it is embedded in your main text or set off as a block quotation, but this is only so if no punctuation would be required were the entire sentence constructed of your own words. My next sentence provides a simple example. Smith and Jones conducted a similar trial and ‘discovered that over half of the participants could not complete the four tasks.’

In other cases, nothing more than the full stop closing the preceding sentence is required before a quotation, whether embedded or block, if the logic of the quotation naturally follows that of the preceding sentence and can start (or already is) a sentence of its own. My next two sentences demonstrate how this works in running prose, but the second sentence could easily be displayed as a block quotation, especially if it were longer. Thompson read the manuscript very carefully and discovered clear evidence of several early readers. ‘Marginal notes in three different hands appear on most pages, while an earlier hand corrected the text and a later one added drawings that are themselves a commentary on the treatise.’
Often a comma is the correct punctuation to introduce a quotation, as is the case in the following sentence. In an early study of the effects of chemotherapy, ‘patients were shown to recover much more quickly and with fewer negative side effects when they did not receive chemotherapy as part of their treatment.’ Again, if the quotation is long, it can be formatted as a block quotation using the exact same punctuation. Commas are also used to present dialogue effectively, and are therefore common when reporting and discussing interviews: ‘Are you sure,’ the researcher repeated, ‘that you didn’t see anything else before the bridge collapsed?’

In many cases, however, and especially in formal English, a colon is more appropriate than a comma. A colon is often used to introduce scholarly quotations, and it is a good choice when more than one sentence or passage is quoted or when emphasis is required. A colon also tends to clarify sentence structure as well as the line between your own text and quoted passages, so it can improve the clarity and legibility of a complex text. My next sentence provides an example. Question 4 was designed to help us refine our understanding of any limitations perceived by the participants: ‘Was there any task the domestic robot was not able to accomplish due to its size?’ A colon is especially well suited to introducing block quotations, with the colon coming at the end of your own running text and the block quotation following on a new line.

Quoting and paraphrasing in your research
Quoting and paraphrasing the work of authors engaged in writing about your topic adds expert support to your research papers.
In any study of a subject, people engage in a “conversation” of sorts, where they read/listen to others’ ideas, consider them with their own viewpoints, and then develop their own stance. It is important in this “conversation” to acknowledge when we use someone else’s words or idea. If we didn’t come up with it ourselves, we need to tell our readers who did come up with it.
Quoting is when you use the exact words from a source. You will need to put quotation marks around the words that are not your own and cite where they came from.
Follow these tips when quoting from sources
- Choose passages that seem especially well phrased or are unique to the author or subject matter.
- Be selective in your quotations. Avoid over-quoting.
- You don’t have to quote an entire passage. Use ellipses (. . .) to indicate omitted words.
- It's okay (and sometimes advisable) to introduce the author’s name before the quotation.
- Before or after quoting a passage, include an explanation in which you interpret the significance of the quote for the reader.
- If you are having trouble paraphrasing (putting something into your own words), that may be a sign that you should quote it.
- Shorter quotes are generally incorporated into the flow of a sentence while longer quotes may be set off in “blocks.” Check your citation handbook for quoting guidelines.
Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing is when you state the ideas from another source in your own words. Even when you use your own words, if the ideas or facts came from another source, you need to cite where they came from.
Follow these tips when paraphrasing
- Don’t take a passage and change a word here or there. If the information is too close to the original (even if it follows a similar sentence structure), it may be considered plagiarism.
- Read the passage, reflect upon it, and restate it in a way that is meaningful to you within the context of your paper.
- After reading the passage that you want to paraphrase, look away from it, and imagine explaining the main point to another person.
- After paraphrasing the passage, go back and compare it to the original. Are there any phrases that have come directly from the original source? If so, you should rephrase it or put the original in quotation marks.
If you cannot state an idea in your own words, you should use the direct quotation.
Ideally, papers will contain a good balance of direct quotations, paraphrasing and your own thoughts. Too much reliance on quotations and paraphrasing can make it seem like you are only using the work of others and have no original thoughts on the topic.
Always properly cite an author’s original idea, whether you have directly quoted or paraphrased it. - Citation and Quotation in a Research Paper
How to Use Quotes in Your Research Paper
Don’t think that your research is good enough? You can make your research paper or other writing assignments stronger using quotations. You can cite some key piece of studied source, and it will strengthen arguments in your paper. It means that the works of other writers can distinguish and highlight specific and important things.
Why should you use Quotes in a Research Paper?
- A good citation makes it possible to find the sources which you have used while studying the issue of your research paper. All citations which you use in the research paper can help the audience to expand their knowledge;
- Citing other writers’ ideas and thoughts can show that you have studied the topic deeply and have looked through the literature on your issue so you can make informative and persuasive conclusions. It can increase your credibility as the writer of the research work;
- Don’t forget that ideas of other writers and researchers can be used in your paper. They may greatly reinforce your evidence and arguments. You can also disagree with them. You will show that your viewpoint or position is opposite and you may use their points of view to argue. You may use writers’ arguments in order to emphasize your point or clarify its difference and importance;
- Beware of over-dimensional quotes in the paper. In fact, the ideas of other writers in the frames of citations can strengthen your arguments and at the same time they can bring down your credibility if the reader finds out that the argument is false or fabricated. That’s why it’s important to quote the information properly;
- Someone’s ideas and research papers are the intellectual property as you know. You should necessarily cite where you got an idea from. Otherwise, you can face serious repercussions. At worst, it can result in legal action. If one is fortunate, it can simply ruin his career and his reputation.
Identifying Sources in the Text of Your Research Paper
- Some signal that a citation will be presented soon. You can use the author's name or a reference to his research paper or other work;
- A statement which shows the relationship or connection between the quote and the main text.
Peculiarities of Quoting the Material
How to include long quotes in the research paper.
- First of all, you should change the font. It should be noticeably smaller in order not to overload the text;
- Make a double indent when inserting the citation. You should adjust right and left margins. It’s great if they are smaller than the main text of the research paper;
- Technically edit the text;
- You shouldn’t use quotation marks for the whole citation. You may stop on graphic changes that were listed above. They are quite enough, and they will indicate that your research paper is quoted.
How to Leave Out a Part of a Citation?
- If you want to delete some words at the start of a citation in your research paper, you may simply start the citation exactly at the place which you consider an appropriate;
- If there is a need to delete words in the middle of a citation you can show the deleting using ellipses;
- In order to delete words at the end part of the citation, you should place the ellipses at the end of the sentence.

A rundown of the general rules of when and where to use quotation marks.
Using Quotation Marks
The primary function of quotation marks is to set off and represent exact language (either spoken or written) that has come from somebody else. The quotation mark is also used to designate speech acts in fiction and sometimes poetry. Since you will most often use them when working with outside sources, successful use of quotation marks is a practical defense against accidental plagiarism and an excellent practice in academic honesty. The following rules of quotation mark use are the standard in the United States, although it may be of interest that usage rules for this punctuation do vary in other countries.
The following covers the basic use of quotation marks. For details and exceptions consult the separate sections of this guide.
Direct Quotations
Direct quotations involve incorporating another person's exact words into your own writing.
- Quotation marks always come in pairs. Do not open a quotation and fail to close it at the end of the quoted material.
Mr. Johnson, who was working in his field that morning, said, "The alien spaceship appeared right before my own two eyes."
Although Mr. Johnson has seen odd happenings on the farm, he stated that the spaceship "certainly takes the cake" when it comes to unexplainable activity.
"I didn't see an actual alien being," Mr. Johnson said, "but I sure wish I had."
When quoting text with a spelling or grammar error, you should transcribe the error exactly in your own text. However, also insert the term sic in italics directly after the mistake, and enclose it in brackets. Sic is from the Latin, and translates to "thus," "so," or "just as that." The word tells the reader that your quote is an exact reproduction of what you found, and the error is not your own.
Mr. Johnson says of the experience, "It's made me reconsider the existence of extraterestials [ sic ]."
- Quotations are most effective if you use them sparingly and keep them relatively short. Too many quotations in a research paper will get you accused of not producing original thought or material (they may also bore a reader who wants to know primarily what YOU have to say on the subject).
Indirect Quotations
Indirect quotations are not exact wordings but rather rephrasings or summaries of another person's words. In this case, it is not necessary to use quotation marks. However, indirect quotations still require proper citations, and you will be committing plagiarism if you fail to do so.
Many writers struggle with when to use direct quotations versus indirect quotations. Use the following tips to guide you in your choice.
Use direct quotations when the source material uses language that is particularly striking or notable. Do not rob such language of its power by altering it.
The above should never stand in for:
Use an indirect quotation (or paraphrase) when you merely need to summarize key incidents or details of the text.
Use direct quotations when the author you are quoting has coined a term unique to her or his research and relevant within your own paper.
When to use direct quotes versus indirect quotes is ultimately a choice you'll learn a feeling for with experience. However, always try to have a sense for why you've chosen your quote. In other words, never put quotes in your paper simply because your teacher says, "You must use quotes."

- Step 12 Research Paper Quotes and Citations (MLA)
The APA style is the method for formatting a paper, including quotations, and citing sources, that has been provided and recognized by the American Psychological Association. APA is the style that is normally used is a variety of social sciences and humanities fields, such as psychology and sociology. However, the APA style is at times used in other fields, and will sometimes be assigned by a professor as specific requirement for a research paper. Many scholarly publications and professional journals also require the use of the APA style. It is therefore essential that effective writers familiarize themselves with the APA style and strive to become skilled in its use.
In-Text Quotations
There are several ways quotations may be utilized in the APA style. The simplest of these is an in-text quotation. A quotation of this kind often involves a paraphrase of the source’s original words rather than a direct quotation. Instead, the author’s last name will be provided as a source of the information with the date of publication of the author’s original work cited in parenthesis.
APA In-Text Quotation Examples
1. Davidson (1994) found that previous research had been inadequate and wished to explore the question further.
2. In the most recent study of this particular type of treatment for cancer patients (Johnson, 2013), it was discovered that….
3. In 2004, Stephens analyzed the effectiveness of…
Short Quotations
A short quotation will normally include forty words or less. A quotation of this type should be included within double quotation marks. An in-text citation should be present that includes the author’s last name, date of publication, and the page number. Punctuation marks that are part of the writer’s original text should be placed after the parenthesis around the citation, but punctuation marks that are actually part of the quote should be included before the citation and within the quotation marks.
APA Short Quotation Examples
1. The author of the study observed, “The medications showed little effect when initially provided to patients” (Richardson, 2008, p. 65), but offered only limited explanation of the specific symptoms of the patients.
2. According to Sanchez (1999) “President Lincoln was the most influential statesman in American history” (p. 225).
3. Chung (2001) argued that “Germany started World War One as a result of its imperial ambitions” in his early work (p. 154), but modified his thesis in his later work.
Long Quotations
Longer quotations (normally those with more than forty words) should be included as a block quotation without quotation marks. The quotation should be started on a separate line, and the entire quotation (not just the first line) should be indented in the same manner as a new paragraph would be. Subsequent paragraphs in the quotation should also be indented in the same way, and the quotation should be followed by a page number in parenthesis.
APA Long Quotation Example
1. Bryant’s research was published in 2005 and suggested that earlier research of this kind in genetics had been incomplete. It was observed that further research was necessary in order to further determine the hereditary patterns concerning disease susceptibility in these areas of concern. (p. 98)
Compiling a List of References
Every source that is cited or quoted in the text of the paper should be listed in a compilation of references that appears at the end of the paper when using the APA style. The reference list should include not only sources that are directly quoted in the paper, but also any other sources for which an in-text citation is provided. A quality paper should included in-text citations for all ideas and information that are not either original to the author or a matter of general common knowledge. For example, if the writer conducts their own scientific research and offers their own interpretation of the data they present, then this information involves the writer’s own work and thoughts, and a citation is not needed. However, it is necessary to include a citation for any reference to prior research by other writers, or previous ideas offered by other writers, that is either directly referred to or used as a source of information for the paper. Likewise, it would not be necessary to include a reference or citation when stating that George Washington was the first President of the United States since this is a well-known and established fact. However, a discussion of the personal and political conflicts between George Washington and Thomas Paine would require references and citations as these questions are less clear in terms of the facts and subject to interpretation.
The format for listing references in the APA style varies according to the nature of the particular source being referenced. Examples of how particular kinds of sources should be formatted are provided below:
Print Sources
An article in a scholarly publication, newspaper, or magazine
The last name of each author should be listed followed by their initials. The year, month and day of publication should follow in parenthesis. The title of the article should then be provided in lower case lettering. The publication in question and the specific volume of the publication should then be listed in italics, followed by the issue number and the page numbers listed in regular text, but separated by a comma. The first line of the reference should start at the left margin. The hanging indent feature should be used for subsequent lines.

Print Source Examples
Johnson, C.B., Davis, D.M., & Stevenson, R.P. (2012, February 11). A comparison of the heart disease rates among smokers and non-smokers. Journal of American Medicine 20, 2, 45-53
Thomas, B. T. (1969, September 1). Trial of the Chicago eight to begin this month. Time 24, 21-26.
The last name of the author should appear at the left margin followed by their initials and the year of publication in parenthesis. The title of the book should then appear in lower case lettering using italics. The city of publication should then be listed followed by the publisher, with a colon separating the two. Once again, any additional lines in the reference should include a hanging indent.
Book Example
Cho, W. C. (2007). Class conflict in nineteenth century England. London: Progressive Publishing
Richards, T.A. (1999). The role of the state in fostering class inequality: The debate between anarchists and Marxists. In B. T. Rubin (Ed.), Class struggles in the industrialized world (pp. 66-81). New York: Radical Publishers.
The last name and initials of the authors appear at the left margin followed by the publication date in parenthesis. The title of the work is listed in lower case lettering using italics, and followed by an indication that this is an online source in brackets. The date the online source was retrieved then appears followed by the website and the URL. Each additional line in the reference should include a hanging indent.
Perez, A.C. & Norton, T.M. (2014, July 14). The conflict in the Ukraine continues [online]. Retrieved August 3, 2014 from World Affairs website: URL
Online publications
The same format is used for listing the author and publication date that would be used for a website or print publication. The title of the article will then appear in lower case lettering. The publication, issue, and page numbers will be listed next using italics and lower case lettering. The date of retrieval will then be listed followed by the URL.

Email references
An email reference does not need to be included in a general reference list as emails are a form of private communication and not a matter of public record. However, an email source should be included as an in-text citation in the paper.
The leading scientist on the research team indicated he was not satisfied with the research process (James Vyas, personal communication, August 8, 2014).

Using Footnotes and Endnotes in APA
The APA style does not encourage the frequent or extensive use of footnotes or endnotes when writing an academic paper. These should be used only when necessary for explanatory purposes, such as the clarification of bibliographical references or the inclusion of extraneous but relevant information.
See Thomas (2004) for further explanation of research in this area.
On anthropological studies of the ancient Hindus Valley civilization, see Rubenstein (1997) pp. 197-264. For comparable studies of the Macedonian civilization, see Perdue (2001).
Simons discussed his theories more extensively in an interview with Time magazine (Nichols, 2009, pp. 24-26).
The proper method of formatting footnotes in APA is to provide a textual indication of the footnote using ordinary numbers in superscript form. The footnotes are then listed on a separate page from the body of the text. This page should be headlined simply as Footnotes with the heading appearing at the top of the page in the center. The notes on this page should likewise be identified with the use of ordinary numbers in superscript form. The notes should also be double-spaced.

Quoting: When and how to use quotations
On this page, when should you quote, quoting basics, framing your quotations.
Quoting is an important technique used to include information from outside sources in academic writing. When using quotations, it is important that you also cite the original reference that you have taken the quotation from, as your citations provide your reader with a map of the research that you have done. Making effective use of quotations in your writing requires you to carefully assess the value of including someone else’s own words in the advancement of your own argument.
According to Jerry Plotnick (2002, Director of the University College Writing Workshop) using a quotation is appropriate in the following situations:
1. The language of the passage is particularly elegant, powerful, or memorable.
2. You wish to confirm the credibility of your argument by enlisting the support of an authority on your topic.
3. The passage is worthy of further analysis.
4. You wish to argue with someone else’s position in considerable detail. [1]
Research that involves participants (for example, interviews and participant-observation research) also often makes extensive use of quotations in order to foreground the unique voices and perspectives of the participants.
When you quote, you include the words and ideas of others in your text exactly as they have expressed them. You signal this inclusion by placing quotation marks (“ ”) around the source author’s words and providing an in-text citation after the quotation. Direct quotations differ from other in-text citations because they require that you include the page number on which the words can be found in the source text. For example:
According to scholars of rhetoric Graff and Birkenstein (2014), when you are inserting a quotation in your writing “you need to insert it into what we like to call a ‘quotation sandwich,’ with the statement introducing it serving as the top slice of bread and the explanation following it serving as the bottom slice” (p. 46). [2] This "sandwich" method ensures that your reader can clearly see the source you are referencing and also understands how this quotation supports your overall argument.
When you are quoting from a source that does not have page numbers (such as a website), you will consult your style guide to determine how best to reference your source. For example, both MLA and APA suggest listing the paragraph number or relevant heading.
You quote materials from a source text to support the arguments and ideas you are presenting in your own essay. Therefore, you must introduce the quotation and explain to your reader why you have included it and how it relates to, and helps to build, your argument. This is known as framing. It directs your reader’s attention to the specific elements of the quotation that are most directly relevant to your own arguments and ideas.
Here is an example of a quotation that is successfully “framed” within a text:
Citing the islands of Fiji as a case in point, Bordo notes that “until television was introduced in 1995, the islands had no reported cases of eating disorders. In 1998, three years after programs from the United States and Britain began broadcasting there, 62 percent of the girls surveyed reported dieting” (149-50). Bordo’s point is that the Western cult of dieting is spreading even to remote places across the globe. [3]
Remember that quoting is only one way of bringing someone else’s work into your own discussion. See the SLC handouts “Techniques for paraphrasing” and “Summarizing” for ideas on other ways to incorporate sources into your writing.

by Kaelyn Barron | 10 comments

There are some specific rules you’ll need to follow, however, especially once you throw in other punctuations or mix quotes within quotes.
When to Use Quotation Marks
Quotation marks should be used to directly quote the words of someone else, with titles of short works, and when indicating certain words as words.
Direct Quotes
Use quotation marks when you want to use the exact words of someone else in your writing.
For example:
“It’s getting late,” John said. “Maybe we should go home.”
Note that you could also relay what John said without a direct quotation:
John said it’s getting late and maybe we should go home.
Quotes like the example above are usually best suited for creative writing.
If you were sending a text to a friend, for instance, you would probably use the second method and simply relay what John said.
In fiction, however, quotations are used to create dialogue, and dialogue is an excellent way to let your characters speak for themselves and move the plot along more naturally.
In nonfiction, quotes are usually included to present information from other sources. However, if information is simply being paraphrased, quotation marks are not needed.
Run-in and Block Quotations
Run-in quotations are shorter quotes (like the examples above) that take the same format as the regular text that surrounds it.
Block quotes, on the other hand, are longer quotes that are separated from their surrounding text. Although they are direct quotes, direct quotes do not need quotation marks because they are usually separated from the text (in a new paragraph with indented margins, a different font style, or by some other distinction).
Refer to your designated style guide for specific rules regarding how long a quote should be before it becomes a block quote (although five or more lines is generally a good rule).
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speeches often utilized parallel structure to emphasize key points. One example can be found in his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we’ve come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.
Titles of Short Works
Most style guides dictate that titles of books, films, magazines, newspapers, and other large works be italicized.
Titles of shorter works, such as poems, chapter titles, and short stories, are placed in quotation marks.
“Mad Girl’s Love Song” is a poem by Sylvia Plath.
He’s currently on Chapter 2, “How to Teach Your Dog to Roll Over.”
“A Sound of Thunder” is a short story by Ray Bradbury.
Words as Words
In some cases, such as when you’re defining a word, you need to indicate which word you’re referring to. Use quotation marks to make this clear.
“SEO” is short for search engine optimization.
The word “tranquil” is synonymous with “calm.”
Quotation Mark Rules
There are several key grammatical rules to keep in mind when using quotation marks in your writing.
Quotations and Capitalization
If you’re quoting a complete sentence, the quotation should start with a capital letter (even if your sentence doesn’t begin with the quote).
Mark explained, “There aren’t enough rooms available for everyone at the house.”
If you are only quoting a particular phrase or selection of words—not a complete sentence—then your quotation should not start with capital letters.
Mark explained that there “weren’t enough rooms” at the house.
If you are splitting a complete sentence in half to insert a parenthetical, then the second half of the quote should not be capitalized.
“The problem,” Mark explained, “is that there aren’t enough rooms for everyone.”
Quotations and Other Punctuations
When quotations contain complete sentences, there is often confusion about where the quotation marks should be placed.
Commas and periods should always go inside quotation marks. Other ending punctuations, like question marks, are placed inside the quotation marks when they apply to the quoted material.
“Is it really necessary?” Sandy asked.
In the example above, Sandy is asking a question, so the question mark is placed inside the quotation marks.
Did Tommy tell you that these things are “really necessary”?
Here, an unnamed writer is asking if Tommy used the precise words “really necessary”; she is asking a question, but she is only quoting two words.
Tina loved everything about the “Eternal City”: its monuments, its river, and especially its food.
The “Eternal City” is in quotation marks because it is a name commonly used to describe Rome. The colon is placed outside, because it is not part of the name.
Quotes Within Quotes
If you want to quote something that already contains a quote, do not use double quotation marks.
“”The Road Not Taken” is my favorite poem,” Michelle said.
Instead, use single quotation marks (‘ ‘) for quotes within quotes.
“‘The Road Not Taken’ is my favorite poem,” Michelle said.
British vs. American Use
If you’re writing for a British audience, note that the British style calls for only single quotation marks (‘ ‘), except when there is a quote within a quote, in which case the double quotation marks are employed.
‘I love your dress, where did you get it?’ she asked the girl.
Additionally, the British also leave punctuation marks that are not part of the quote, such as commas, outside of the quotation marks.
‘It’s such a lovely day’, said Mary, ‘we should go for a walk.’
Check Your Style Guide
Rules for proper use of quotation marks may vary between Chicago , AP , MLA , and other style guides.
When in doubt, always refer to your style guide for the most up to date, accurate information for your specific kind of writing.

Hi Kaelyn I’m writing a biographical book about my great grandparents and I’m wondering how to show when they receive a letter from home. Does the written text of the letter need to be separated by single quotes? Just wondering what the rule was for that situation. Thank you so much.
Hi Deedy, thanks for your question! For a letter, the best thing to do is indent the entire text of the letter so it’s clear it’s separate. You can italicize it or not (I’ve seen both, but no quotes necessary :)
As a novelist, I use characters that talk a lot for a long time. When I move on to a different thought from the character in the next paragraph, do I have to use open quotes? Or do I just continue writing without the open (“) quote?

Hi Lloyd! Thanks for the question. Personally, I think it’s best if you still use the open quote. It’s a visual indication that your character is still talking, so it confuses the reader less.
I do also suggest breaking up the dialogue with some exposition. From my experience, long dialogues/monologues often disrupt the scene, making it hard to remember what else is happening aside from the characters talking.
How should I write what a sign reads/says? Should it be in quotations? All caps? Both? (ex. The sign reads: “PROCESSING.”) Thanks in advance for all you do!
Rick (Author of The Fifth Plane and the upcoming novel The Last Sand Granules)
Hi Rick, thanks for your comment! It doesn’t matter so much which style you choose so long as you’re consistent. In general, though, I wouldn’t put it in a ll caps unless you want to emphasize that the actual sign was in all caps. If you’re using a colon, you might even drop the quotation marks, but keep them if you use a comma.
Hello Kaelyn, if you would please, let me know how can I emphasize the quotation when reading a text? Shall I say: start quote “riding upon the air” end quote, is an Oriental phrase…
Hi Marcus, thanks for your question! You have a few options. I wouldn’t recommend using quote/end quote. You could simply write the quotation in quotation marks, like this: “Riding upon the air” is an Oriental phrase. OR, you could say: The phrase “riding upon the air” is Oriental in origin.
In writing a story I was told that I need to keep it separate like this. Mike asked, “Are you going to eat that?” “No.” answered John.
Hi Kathryne, yes, the two speakers should appear on different lines. However, if you want to attribute “No” that way, it should have a comma and not a period.

How to use Quotes in an Essay in 7 Simple Steps

A quote can be an effective and powerful literary tool in an essay, but it needs to be done well. To use quotes in an essay, you need to make sure your quotes are short, backed up with explanations, and used rarely. The best essays use a maximum of 2 quotes for every 1500 words.
Rules for using quotes in essays:
- Avoid Long Quotes.
- Quotes should be less than 1 sentence long.
- Match Quotes with Explanations and Examples.
- Use Max. 2 Quotes for 1500 words.
- Use page numbers when Citing Quotes.
- Don’t Italicize Quotes.
- Avoid quotes inside quotes.
Once you have mastered these quotation writing rules you’ll be on your way to growing your marks in your next paper.
How to use Quotes in an Essay
1. avoid long quotes.
There’s a simple rule to follow here: don’t use a quote that is longer than one line. In fact, four word quotes are usually best.
Long quotes in essays are red flags for teachers. It doesn’t matter if it is an amazing quote. Many, many teachers don’t like long quotes, so it’s best to avoid them.
Too many students provide quotes that take up half of a paragraph. This will lose you marks – big time.
If you follow my perfect paragraph formula , you know that most paragraphs should be about six sentences long, which comes out to about six or seven typed lines on paper. That means that your quote will be a maximum of one-sixth (1/6) of your paragraph. This leaves plenty of space for discussion in your own words.
One reason teachers don’t like long quotes is that they suck up your word count. It can start to look like you didn’t have enough to say, so you inserted quotes to pad out your essay. Even if this is only your teacher’s perception, it’s something that you need to be aware of.
Here’s an example of over-use of quotes in paragraphs:
Avoid Quotes that are Too Long
Children who grow up in poverty often end up being poor as adults. “Many adult Americans believe that hard work and drive are important factors on economic mobility. When statistics show that roughly 42% of children born into the bottom level of the income distribution will likely stay there (Isaacs, 2007), this Is a consequence of structural and social barriers.” (Mistry et al., 2016, p. 761). Therefore poverty in childhood needs to be addressed by the government.
This student made the fatal mistake of having the quote overtake the paragraph.
Simply put, don’t use a quote that is longer than one line long. Ever. It’s just too risky.
Personally, I like to use a 4-word quote in my essays. Four-word quotes are long enough to constitute an actual quote but short enough that I have to think about how I will fit that quote around my own writing. This forces me to write quotations that both show:
- I have read the original source, but also:
- I know how to paraphrase
2. Do not use a Quote to that takes up a full Sentence, Starts a Sentence, or Ends a Paragraph
These are three common but fatal mistakes.
Essay quotes that start sentences or end paragraphs make you appear passive.
If you use a quotation in an essay to start a sentence or end a paragraph, your teacher automatically thinks that your quote is replacing analysis, rather than supporting it.
You should instead start the sentence that contains the quote with your own writing. This makes it appear that you have an active voice .
Similarly, you should end a paragraph with your own analysis, not a quote.
Let’s look at some examples of quotes that start sentences and end paragraphs. These examples are poor examples of using quotes:
Avoid Quotes that Start Sentences The theorist Louis Malaguzzi was the founder of the Reggio Emilia Approach to Education. “Children have the ability to learn through play and exploration. Play helps children to learn about their surroundings” (Malaguzzi, 1949, p. 10). Play is better than learning through repetition of drills or reading. Play is good for all children.
Avoid Quotes that End Paragraphs Before Judith Butler gender was seen as being a binary linked to sex, men were masculine and women were feminine. Butler came up with this new idea that gender is just something society has made up over time. “Gender is a fluid concept” (Butler, 1990, p. 136).
Both these quotes are from essays that were shared with me by colleagues. My colleagues marked these students down for these quotes because of the quotes:
- took up full sentences;
- started sentences; and
- were used to end paragraphs.
It didn’t appear as if the students were analyzing the quotes. Instead, the quotes were doing the talking for the students.
There are some easy strategies to use in order to make it appear that you are actively discussing and analyzing quotes.
One is that you should make sure the essay sentences with quotes in them don’t start with the quote . Here are some examples of how we can change the quotes:
Example 1: Start Quote Sentences with an Active Voice The theorist Louis Malaguzzi was the founder of the Reggio Emilia Approach to Education. According to Malaguzzi (1949, p. 10), “children have the ability to learn through play and exploration.” Here, Malaguzzi is highlighting how to play is linked to finding things out about the world. Play is important for children to develop. Play is better than learning through repetition of drills or reading. Play is good for all children.
Here, the sentence with the quote was amended so that the student has an active voice. They start the sentence with According to Malaguzzi, ….
Similarly, in the second example, we can also insert an active voice by ensuring that our quote sentence does not start with a quote:
Example 2: Start Quote Sentences with an Active Voice In 1990, Judith Butler revolutionized Feminist understandings of gender by arguing that “gender is a fluid concept” (p. 136). Before Butler’s 1990 book Gender Trouble , gender was seen as being a binary linked to sex. Men were masculine and women were feminine. Butler came up with this new idea that gender is just something society has made up over time.
In this example, the quote is not at the start of a sentence or end of a paragraph – tick!
How to Start Sentences containing Quotes using an Active Voice
- According to Malaguzzi (1949, p. 10), “…”
- Malaguzzi (1949, p. 10) argues that “…”
- In 1949, Malaguzzi (p. 10) highlighted that “…”
- The argument of Malaguzzi (1949, p. 10) that “…” provides compelling insight into the issue.
3. Match Quotes with Explanations and Examples
Earlier on, I stated that one key reason to use quotes in essays is so that you can analyze them.
Quotes shouldn’t stand alone as explanations. Quotes should be there to be analyzed, not to do the analysis.
Let’s look again at the quote used in Point 1:
Example: A Quote that is Too Long Children who grow up in poverty often end up being poor as adults. “Many adult Americans believe that hard work and drive are important factors in economic mobility.
This student has included the facts, figures, citations and key details in the quote. Essentially, this student has been lazy. They failed to paraphrase.
Instead, this student could have selected the most striking phrase from the quote and kept it. Then, the rest should be paraphrased. The most striking phrase in this quote was “[poverty] is a consequence of structural and social barriers.” (Mistry et al., 2016, p. 761).
So, take that one key phrase, then paraphrase the rest:
Example: Paraphrasing Long Quotes Children who grow up in poverty often end up being poor as adults. In their analysis, Mistry et al. (2016) highlight that there is a misconception in American society that hard work is enough to escape poverty. Instead, they argue, there is evidence that over 40% of people born in poverty remain in poverty. For Mistry et al. (2016, p. 761), this data shows that poverty is not a matter of being lazy alone, but more importantly “a consequence of structural and social barriers.” This implies that poverty in childhood needs to be addressed by the government.
To recap, quotes shouldn’t do the talking for you . Provide a brief quote in your essay, and then show you understand it with surrounding explanation and analysis.
4. Know how many Quotes to use in an Essay
There’s a simple rule for how many quotes should be in an essay.
Here’s a good rule to follow: one quote for every five paragraphs. A paragraph is usually 150 words long, so you’re looking at one quote in every 750 words, maximum .
To extrapolate that out, you’ll want a maximum of about:
- 2 quotes for a 1500-word paper;
- 3 quotes for a 2000-word paper;
- 4 quotes for a 3000-word paper.
That’s the maximum , not a target. There’s no harm in writing a paper that has absolutely zero quotes in it, so long as it’s still clear that you’ve closely read and paraphrased your readings.
The reason you don’t want to use more quotes than this in your essay is that teachers want to see you saying things in your own words. When you over-use quotes, it is a sign to your teacher that you don’t know how to paraphrase well.
5. Always use page numbers when Citing Quotes in Essays
One biggest problem with quotes are that many students don’t know how to cite quotes in essays.
Nearly every referencing format requires you to include a page number in your citation. This includes the three most common referencing formats: Harvard, APA, and MLA. All of them require you to provide page numbers with quotes.
Citing a Quote in Chicago Style – Include Page Numbers
- Incorrect: “Gender is a fluid concept” (Butler 1990).
- Correct: “Gender is a fluid concept” (Butler 1990, 136).
Citing a Quote in APA and Harvard Styles – Include Page Numbers
- Incorrect: “Gender is a fluid concept” (Butler, 1990).
- Correct: “Gender is a fluid concept” (Butler, 1990, p. 136).
Citing a Quote in MLA Style – Include Page Numbers
- Incorrect: “Gender is a fluid concept” (Butler).
- Correct: “Gender is a fluid concept” (Butler 136).
Including a page number in your quotation makes a huge difference when a marker is trying to determine how high your grade should be.
This is especially true when you’re already up in the higher marks range. These little editing points can mean the difference between placing first in the class and third. Don’t underestimate the importance of attention to detail.
6. Don’t Italicize Quotes
For some reason, students love to use italics for quotes. This is wrong in absolutely every major referencing format, yet it happens all the time.
I don’t know where this started, but please don’t do it. It looks sloppy, and teachers notice. A nice, clean, well-formatted essay should not contain these minor but not insignificant errors. If you want to be a top student, you need to pay attention to minor details.
7. Avoid quotes inside quotes
Have you ever found a great quote and thought, “I want to quote that quote!” Quoting a quote is a tempting thing to do, but not worth your while.
I’ll often see students write something like this:
Poor Quotation Example: Quotes Inside Quotes Rousseau “favored a civil religion because it would be more tolerant of diversity than Christianity. Indeed ‘no state has ever been founded without religion as its base’ (Rousseau, 1913: 180).” (Durkheim, 1947, p. 19).
Here, there are quotes on top of quotes. The student has quoted Durkheim quoting Rousseau. This quote has become a complete mess and hard to read. The minute something’s hard to read, it loses marks.
Here are two solutions:
- Cite the original source. If you really want the Rousseau quote, just cite Rousseau. Stop messing around with quotes on top of quotes.
- Learn the ‘as cited in’ method. Frankly, that method’s too complicated to discuss here. But if you google it, you’ll be able to teach yourself.
When Should I use Quotes in Essays?
1. to highlight an important statement.
One main reason to use quotes in essays is to emphasize a famous statement by a top thinker in your field.
The statement must be important. It can’t be just any random comment.
Here are some examples of when to use quotes in essays to emphasize the words of top thinkers:
- The words of Stephen Hawking go a long way in Physics ;
- The words of JK Rowling go a long way in Creative Writing ;
- The words of Michel Foucault go a long way in Cultural Studies ;
- The words of Jean Piaget go a long way in Education Studies .
2. To analyze an Important Statement.
Another reason to use quotes in essays is when you want to analyze a statement by a specific author. This author might not be famous, but they might have said something that requires unpacking and analyzing. You can provide a quote, then unpack it by explaining your interpretation of it in the following sentences.
Quotes usually need an explanation and example. You can unpack the quote by asking:
- What did they mean,
- Why is it relevant, and
- Why did they say this?
You want to always follow up quotes by top thinkers or specific authors with discussion and analysis.
Quotes should be accompanied by:
- Explanations of the quote;
- Analysis of the ideas presented in the quote; or
- Real-world examples that show you understand what the quote means.
Remember: A quote should be a stimulus for a discussion, not a replacement for discussion.
What Bad Quotes Look Like
Many teachers I have worked with don’t like when students use quotes in essays. In fact, some teachers absolutely hate essay quotes. The teachers I have met tend to hate these sorts of quotes:
- When you use too many quotes.
- When you use the wrong citation format.
- When you don’t provide follow-up explanations of quotes.
- When you used quotes because you don’t know how to paraphrase .

Be a minimalist when it comes to using quotes. Here are the seven approaches I recommend for using quotes in essays:
- Avoid Long Quotes in Essays
- Do not use a Quote that takes up a full Sentence, Starts a Sentence, or Ends a Paragraph
- Match Quotes with Explanations and Examples
- Use a Maximum of 2 Quotes for every 1500 words
- Always use page numbers when Citing Quotes in Essays
- Don’t Italicize Quotes
- Avoid quotes inside quotes

When to Use Quotation Marks ("") | Rules & Examples
Published on May 21, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on November 29, 2022 by Jack Caulfield.
Quotation marks (also known as quotes or inverted commas) are used to indicate direct speech and quotations.
In academic writing, you need to use quotation marks when you quote a source . This includes quotes from published works and primary data such as interviews . The exception is when you use a block quote, which should be set off and indented without quotation marks.
Whenever you quote someone else’s words, use a signal phrase to introduce it and integrate the source into your own text. Don’t rely on quotations to make your point for you.
Table of contents
Single vs. double quotation marks, quotes within quotes, punctuation following quotations, quotation marks for source titles, indirect quotation, scare quotes, frequently asked questions about quotation marks.
There are two types of quotation marks: ‘single’ and “double.” Which one to choose generally depends on whether you are using US or UK English . The US convention is to use double quotation marks, while the UK convention is usually to use single quotation marks.
Double quotation marks can also be acceptable in UK English, provided you are consistent throughout the text. APA Style requires double quotations.
When your quotations are nested (i.e., a quote appears inside another quote), you should use the opposite style of quotation marks for the nested quotation.
Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.
US and UK English also differ on where to place punctuation within quotation marks.
- In US English, commas and periods that follow a quote are placed within the quotation marks.
- In UK English, all punctuation marks are placed outside the quotation marks, except when they are part of the original quotation.
In all variants of English, a question mark appears inside the quotation marks when the person quoted was asking a question, but outside when it’s you asking the question.
- Smith asks, “How long can this situation continue?”
- How many participants reported their satisfaction as “high”?
Note that when you include a parenthetical citation after a quote, the punctuation mark always comes after the citation (except with block quotes ).
- Solis described the situation as “precarious” (2022, p. 16).
Some source titles (e.g., the title of a journal article) should be presented in quotation marks in your text. Others are italicized instead (or occasionally written in plain text).
The rules for how to format different source titles are largely the same across citation styles, though some details differ. The key principles apply in all the main styles:
- Use italics for sources that stand alone
- Use quotation marks for sources that are part of another source
Some examples are shown below, with the proper formatting:
- The Routledge Companion to Critical Theory [book]
- “Poststructuralism” [book chapter]
- Philosophy, Psychiatry & Psychology [journal]
- “What Is Personality Disorder?” [journal article]
- Friends [TV series]
- “The One Where Rachel Quits” [TV episode]
Indirect quotation means reporting what someone said without using exactly the same words they did.
It’s a lot like paraphrasing , except that you’re only changing the words you need to in order to fit the statement into your new sentence grammatically. For example, changing the pronouns or the verb tense .
Indirect quotation is more common in everyday speech, but it can occur in academic writing too. When it does, keep in mind that you should only use quotation marks around words taken directly from the original speaker or author.
- One participant stated that “he found the exercises frustrating.”
- One participant stated that he found the exercises frustrating.
- One participant described the exercises as “frustrating.”
“Scare quotes” are quotation marks used around words that are not a direct quotation from a specific source. They are used to signal that a term is being used in an unusual or ironic way, that it is borrowed from someone else, or that the writer is skeptical about the term.
- Many politicians have blamed recent electoral trends on the rise of “fake news.”
While scare quotes have their uses in academic writing (e.g., when referring to controversial terms), they should only be used with good reason. Inappropriate use of scare quotes creates ambiguity.
- The institution organized a fundraiser in support of “underprivileged children.”
- Scientists argue that “global warming” is accelerating due to greenhouse gas emissions.
- The “Brexit” negotiations are still ongoing.
In these examples, the words within scare quotes are widely accepted terms with clear meanings that can’t be attributed to a specific person or source. Using quotation marks implies skepticism about the concepts in question.
The use of single and double quotation marks when quoting differs between US and UK English . In US English, you must use double quotation marks. Single quotation marks are used for quotes within quotes.
In UK English, it’s most common to use single quotation marks, with double quotation marks for quotes within quotes, although the other way around is acceptable too.
A quote is an exact copy of someone else’s words, usually enclosed in quotation marks and credited to the original author or speaker.
If you’re quoting from a text that paraphrases or summarizes other sources and cites them in parentheses , APA and Chicago both recommend retaining the citations as part of the quote. However, MLA recommends omitting citations within a quote:
- APA: Smith states that “the literature on this topic (Jones, 2015; Sill, 2019; Paulson, 2020) shows no clear consensus” (Smith, 2019, p. 4).
- MLA: Smith states that “the literature on this topic shows no clear consensus” (Smith, 2019, p. 4).
Footnote or endnote numbers that appear within quoted text should be omitted in all styles.
If you want to cite an indirect source (one you’ve only seen quoted in another source), either locate the original source or use the phrase “as cited in” in your citation.
Quotes within quotes are punctuated differently to distinguish them from the surrounding quote .
- If you use double quotation marks for quotes, use single quotation marks for quotes within quotes.
- If you use single quotation marks for quotes (e.g., in UK English ), use double quotation marks for quotes within quotes.
Make sure to close both sets of quotes!
Indirect quotation means reporting what someone said (or wrote) but not using their exact words. It’s similar to paraphrasing , but it only involves changing enough words to fit the statement into your sentence grammatically (e.g., changing the tense or the pronouns ).
Since some of the words have changed, indirect quotations are not enclosed in quotation marks .
