This article explains how to find the IP address of a network-enabled printer on your network in four ways: in the printer's menu, the printer settings on your computer, by issuing a command, or on your router .

Find the Printer IP Address Using the Printer's Built-In Menu

On most printers, the network setting is found in the printer menu under Preferences , Options , or Wireless Settings (if it's a wireless printer).

The IP address for the printer may be displayed at the top of the network settings dialog box. If you don't see it, click through the submenus, such as View Wireless Details , to find the IP address.

In most cases, you can't manually set this IP address. Your wireless router assigns IP addresses automatically to devices that connect to your home network.

Check the printer settings on your computer

If you don't have access to the printer or if you don't want to search through the menu system, find the printer IP address on any computer on which the printer is set up.

For Windows

Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers . Right-click the printer and select Properties .

One of two sets of tabs displays, depending on the type of connection the printer driver uses. If the printer is set up under a WSD port, it uses Web Services for Devices technology to connect to the printer. In this case, select the Web Services tab to see the printer IP address listed in the IP address field .

If you don't see a Web Services tab, then the printer is set up using a TCP/IP port . In this case, find the IP address in Printer Properties .

In Control Panel , choose Devices and Printers .

Right-click the printer and select Properties .

Select the Ports tab. The IP address is displayed in the Port field.

If you don't see the IP address, select Configure Port to see the IP address configured for that printer.

This method to find a printer IP address works for all versions of Windows, but the steps to get to the Control Panel can vary slightly.

In macOS, printer IP addresses may not be visible for Airprint printers. Use one of the other methods here to find the IP address for the printer instead.

Find the IP Address by Issuing a Command

Another quick trick to find the printer IP address is with the command prompt.

Go to the Start menu and enter cmd .

In the Best match section, choose Command Prompt .

Enter netstat -r and press Enter . If the printer is connected using TCP/IP (not WSD), the printer displays in the list of Active Routes in the IPv4 Route Table .

Open Safari (or your browser of choice) and enter localhost:631/printers to see a list of printers and associated IP addresses. These addresses appear in the Location column if the printers are available.

When using an AirPrint printer, the IP may not show up using the method above. In this case, open Applications > Utilities > Terminal and enter ippfind . You'll see something like ipp://yourprinter.local.:631/ipp/port1 , where yourprinter is an alphanumeric expression — in this example, 829B95000000.local.

Enter ping yourprinter.local (where yourprinter is the alphanumeric expression returned by the previous step). The result displays the printer IP address.

Find a Printer's IP Address Using the Router

The last option is to go directly to your router. The router manages all network traffic , so the printer IP must be registered there as a connected device. To view the IP, log in to the router. You'll need the administrator ID and password for the router. If you don't know it, ask whoever set up the router for you.

First, you'll need to know the default gateway IP address. Regardless of the type of computer you use on the network, this is typically http://10.1.1.1 or http://192.168.1.1. If neither of these work, look yours up.

Click Start and enter cmd .

Under Best match , select Command Prompt .

Enter ipconfig . Note the default gateway IP address.

In MacOS, open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > TCP/IP . You'll see the default gateway address next to Router .

The steps are the same regardless of the operating system but can vary slightly depending on the router manufacturer. Open a web browser, and type the default gateway IP address (from the previous step) into the address bar.

In the router login screen, log in to the router using the administrator ID and password.

In the router menu system, select Connected Devices .

In the Host Name field, select the printer.

The printer IP address is listed under IPV4 Address.

What You Can Do With Your Printer's IP Address

Once you have the IP address of your printer, use it to set up the printer from any computer or mobile device connected to your network.

Having the printer IP address handy also enables you to type a ping command in the command prompt from any computer if you have printer problems and need to check if the printer is on the network.

This allows other devices on the network to identify the wireless printer and connect to the Wireless printer using its IP Address.

In general, users want to known the IP Address of Wireless Printer to Add Printer using IP Address and to troubleshoot problems.

1. Find Printer IP Address by Printing Configuration Sheet

Many Wireless Printers list IP Address on the configuration page, which can be printed by pressing and holding the Power button for 10 seconds.

On some other printers, the Configuration page can be printed by going to the Control or Settings Panel located on the Printer (Usually by going to Menu > Information > Print Configuration ).

If your printer is different, check the User Manual to see if the IP Address is listed or if it provides a method to print Configuration page.

2. Find Printer IP Address Using Router

If the Network Printer uses DHCP, you should be able to find its IP Address by logging into the Router.

1. Switch ON the printer, so that it can connect to the Router.

2. Open Chrome or any other Web browser on your computer > type Router iP Address into the Address bar and press the Enter Key .

Note: Above steps may not be applicable or vary, depending on the model of your Router. Refer to the Router Manual or visit the Manufacturers website for the exact details.

3. Find Printer IP Address Using Settings

An easy way to find the IP Address of a Wireless Printer is by going to Settings on your Windows Computer.

1. Go to Settings > Devices > select Printers and Scanners in the left-pane. In the right-pane, select your Printer and click on the Manage option.

2. On the next screen, select you printer and click on Printer Properties option.

3. On Printer Properties screen, you should find the Printer IP Address in “Location” section of the General tab.

4. Find Printer IP Address Using Control Panel

If you are unable to print the configuration page, you can find the IP Address of your Printer by going to Printer Properties page.

1. Right-click on the Start button and click on Run . In Run Command window, type Control Panel and click on OK .

2. On Control Panel screen, click on View Devices and Printers link located under Hardware and Sound section.

5. Find Printer IP Address Using Command Prompt

1. Right-click on Start and click on Command Prompt .

2. On Command Prompt screen, type netstat -r and press the Enter key .

Once the command is executed, you will find IP Address of all network connections listed, including the IP Address of your wireless printer.

Adding a printer to your Windows 10 laptop or desktop these days is user-friendly and requires little-to-no technical knowledge. You can add a printer via USB, your wireless network, or Bluetooth. Here’s how to add a printer in Windows 10, depending on what kind of connection you want to use.

How to Add a Printer in Windows 10 Via Wi-Fi

If your network-capable printer is not automatically detected by Windows, you will need to set it up manually. This will involve going to your printer menu, configuring a TCP/IP a port, and installing the drivers. Follow the steps below to add a network printer in Windows 10.

Open the Windows Start menu . This is the button in the bottom left corner of your screen that is shaped like the Windows logo.

Next, select Printers & Scanners. You can find this in the left sidebar.

Note: Once Windows detects your printer, all you have to do is follow the on-screen instructions for setting it up. If this is the case, you can stop at this point. However, if Windows does not auto-detect your printer, proceed to the next step.

Select the appropriate device type. In the drop-down menu for Standard Device Type, select the device type that corresponds with your printer brand. For example, if you have a Canon printer, choose either Canon Network Printer or Canon Network Printing Device. Windows will then detect the driver model. You will notice that once it detects the driver, your printer will be added to the list of devices in the Printer & Scanners menu.

Note: If you don’t see the driver for your model, click on the box that says Have Disk. You will be instructed to install the driver from the manufacturer’s installation disk and copy it from a drive where the driver is located.

How to Add a Printer Via USB in Windows 10

Note: Before setting up your printer, make sure it is connected to a power source and that your computer is connected to the internet so you can download the necessary drivers.

If you have set it correctly, you should be able to see the printer in the list of printers. You can then print a test page to confirm that the set-up is complete.

Tip: You can set any printer to be the default printer. Windows will send a print job to the default printer every time you print. You can set this up in the Printers and Scanners menu under Settings. Just click on the printer you would like to set as the default, then click Manage > Set as Default.

How to add Bluetooth Printer

You can set a static IP address manually on Windows 10 in several ways, and in this guide, you'll learn using Command Prompt, PowerShell, Control Panel, and Settings.

On Windows 10, setting a static IP address to a computer is a configuration you may need to set up in many scenarios. For example, if you plan to share files , a printer on a local network , or configure port forwarding.

If you do not assign a static IP address, services or a port forwarding configuration may eventually stop working. The reason is that, by default, connected devices use dynamic IP addresses assigned by the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server (usually the router), which can change anytime, as soon as you restart the machine, or after the dynamically assigned configuration lease expires.

In this guide , you will learn the steps to set a static IP (version 4) address to a Windows 10 device when providing a service on the network or simply configuring port forwarding to your device on the router.

To assign a static IP address on Windows 10, use these steps:

Open Settings on Windows 10.

Click on Network & Internet .

Click on “Wi-Fi” or “Ethernet.”

Under the “Use the following DNS server addresses set Preferred DNS server” section, set the Preferred DNS server address , usually your router’s IP address or server IP address providing DNS resolutions (for example, 10.1.2.1 ).

(Optional) Specify an Alternative DNS server , which the computer will use if it cannot reach the preferred DNS server.

Click the OK button.

In the above command, replace Ethernet0 with the name of your network adapter. Change 10.1.4.220 255.255.255.0 10.1.4.1 with the device IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway address corresponding to your network configuration.

In the command, make sure to change Ethernet0 with your adapter’s name and 10.1.4.1 with the DNS server address of the network.

Microsoft is in the process of retiring netsh from Windows 10. As a result, you should start using the “NetTCPIP” networking module available in PowerShell instead.

Windows 10 also includes the PowerShell command line platform that allows you to use the “NetTCPIP” module to manage networking settings, including the ability to change the IP address settings of your computer.

To set a static IP address with PowerShell, use these steps:

Type the following command to view your current network configuration and press Enter :

In the command, replace the InterfaceIndex number (5) with your network adapter’s corresponding number. Also, change ServerAddresses with the DNS IP address.

After you complete the steps, you can test the new configuration by opening your web browser and navigating a website.

Whatever method you use, assigning an IP address within the network range and outside of the DHCP server scope is recommended to allow proper connectivity and avoid address conflicts. If you’re trying to use your printer and run into problems, here are some steps for common printer problems to try to get things working again.

Before you begin

Start by running the automated printer troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Get Help automatically runs diagnostics and takes the correct steps to fix most printer issues.

If the Get Help app is unable to resolve your printer issue, try the possible solutions listed:

Step 1. Unplug and restart your printer

Sometimes power cycling your printer can resolve the issue. Turn off your printer and unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug your printer back in, and then turn the printer back on.

If your printer still doesn’t work, continue to step 2.

Step 2. Check cables or wireless connection

Check the cables (for wired printers). Make sure that the printer's USB cable is properly connected from the printer to your PC. If your USB isn’t recognized, see Automatically diagnose and fix Windows USB problems .

Check the wireless connection (for wireless printers) . Do one of the following:

Make sure the printer’s wireless option is turned on and available. Many printers have a button that displays a blue wireless icon when a wireless connection option for the printer is available. To learn where this button is located on your printer and to find instructions about how to turn it on, see the instructions that came with the printer or check the manufacturer's website for instructions.

Run the printer’s wireless connectivity test. Many printers have a menu option to test the printer’s wireless connectivity. Read the instructions that came with the printer or check the printer manufacturer’s website for instructions about how to do this.

If your printer's status displays "Printer in error state," there may be a problem with the printer itself. If these first two steps did not resolve the error, check the printer for low paper or ink, and be sure the cover isn't open and the paper isn't jammed.

If your printer still doesn’t work, continue to step 3.

Step 3. Uninstall and reinstall your printer

Select the Remove button. Then confirm you're sure you want to remove this device by selecting Yes .

Reinstall your printer

If your printer is turned on and connected to the network, Windows should find it easily. Available printers can include all printers on a network, such as Bluetooth and wireless printers, or printers that are plugged into another computer and shared on the network. You might need permission to install some printers. To reinstall your printer, follow these steps:

Make sure your printer is turned on and connected. Then select the Add device (or Refresh ) button.

Please wait a moment while Windows searches for the printers that are connected to the device (locally or wirelessly). Windows will then display a list of printers connected to your device. If you see your printer listed, select the Add device button for your printer. If you don't see your device listed, select Add manually .

If you use wireless access points, extenders, or multiple wireless routers with separate SSIDs, make sure you're connected to the same network as the printer for your PC to find and install it.

If you have a new wireless printer that hasn’t been added to your home network, read the instructions that came with the printer and check the printer manufacturer’s website to learn more and to get up-to-date software for your printer.

Tip: You can print a test page to make sure the printer is working correctly. If you've installed the printer but it doesn't work, check the manufacturer's website for troubleshooting information or driver updates.

Reinstall your printer manually

If the system cannot install the printer automatically, you can reinstall it manually. When you select Add manually , you will then see five options to Find a printer by other options . Select the option that applies best for your situation and then follow the steps provided. All of the options can apply for a printer that is connected wirelessly or through your network. However, if your printer is connected directly to your computer locally, select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings and then select Next .

Reinstall a local printer manually

After selecting Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings , follow these steps:

Select Use an existing port and then select the port the printer is connected to. Then select Next. If the printer is connected via USB, select it from the list. There are also options for parallel (LPT) and serial (COM) ports.

You will now see options to install the printer driver. If the printer came with a disc that includes the driver, select Have Disk . Otherwise, select Windows Update .

Please wait while Windows updates the list of printers. Then select the printer manufacturer from the left column, and the printer model from the right column. Then select Next .

Note: If there are multiple versions of a driver for your device, you might be asked which version of the driver to use. In most cases, you should select Replace the current driver . However, if you're confident the installed driver is correct, select Use the driver that is currently installed .

Type a name for your printer, and then select Next . This name is only for your personal reference, so you can choose any name you prefer.

Select Do not share this printer. (If you want to share your printer with other devices on your network, select Share this printer and enter the name and location.) Select Next .

Select Print a test page to confirm that the printer is working and then select Finish .

If your printer still doesn’t work, continue to step 4.

Step 4. Install the latest driver for your printer

Most printers require the latest driver to work well. To learn more, read How to download and install the latest printer drivers .

If your printer still doesn’t work after you install the latest driver for your printer, continue to step 5.

Step 5. Clear and reset the print spooler

If the previous troubleshooting step is not successful, you may need to clear spooler files and restart the spooler service. The print spooler is a file that manages the printing process. To clear and reset the print spooler:

In the search box on the taskbar, type services , and then select Services in the list of results.

Select the Standards tab, and then double-click Print Spooler in the list of services.

Select Stop , and then select OK .

In the search box on the taskbar, enter %WINDIR%\system32\spool\printers , select %WINDIR%\system32\spool\PRINTERS in the list of results, and then delete all files in the folder.

In the search box on the taskbar, search for services , and then select Services in the list of results.

Select the Standards tab, and the double-click Print Spooler in the list of services.

Select Start , select Automatic in the Startup Type box, and then select OK .

If your printer still doesn’t work, continue on to step 6.

Step 6. Change a printer's status to "online"

Select the Start button, then select Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners . Open Printers & scanners settings

Under Printers & scanners , find the printer, select it, and then select Remove device .

You'll need to follow different steps to reinstall or add a wireless or local printer. Here's how.

Reinstall a wireless printer

Select Add a printer or scanner . Wait for your device to find nearby printers, choose the one you want, and then select Add device .

Reinstall a local printer

If you want to reinstall or add a local printer, plug the USB cable from your printer into an available USB port on your PC, and then turn on the printer.

Under Printers & scanners , look for your printer.

If you see your printer listed, you'll know it's installed.

If you don't see your printer listed, select Add a printer or scanner . Wait for your device to find available printers, choose the one you want, and then select Add device .

Tip: You can confirm the printer is working by printing a test page. If you've installed the printer but it doesn't work, check the manufacturer's website for troubleshooting information or driver updates.

Connecting your printer

When you connect a printer to your PC or add a new printer to your home network, you can usually start printing right away. Windows supports most printers, and you probably won't have to go out of your way to install special printer software. If you're using Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, additional printer support and drivers are available through Windows Update.

To install a printer

In most cases, all you have to do to set up a printer is to connect it to your PC. Simply plug the USB cable from your printer into an available USB port on your PC, and turn the printer on.

For wireless printers with Windows 8.1:

Note: If you have a new wireless printer that hasn’t been added to your home network, read the instructions that came with the printer to learn how to add it. Check the printer manufacturer’s website to learn more and to get up-to-date software for your printer.

Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings , and then tap Change PC settings . (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, select Settings , and then select Change PC settings .)

Tap or click PC and devices , and then tap or click Devices . If your printer is installed, it should appear under Printers .

If your printer isn’t listed, tap or click Add a device , and then select your printer to install it.

To install (add) a local printer

Click the Start button, and then, on the Start menu, click Devices and Printers .

Click Add a printer .

In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a local printer .

On the Choose a printer port page, make sure that the Use an existing port button and the recommended printer port are selected, and then click Next .

On the Install the printer driver page, select the printer manufacturer and model, and then click Next .

If your printer isn't listed, click Windows Update , and then wait while Windows checks for additional drivers.

If none are available and you have the installation CD, click Have Disk , and then browse to the folder where the printer driver is located. (For additional help, consult the printer manual.)

Complete the additional steps in the wizard, and then click Finish .

To install a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer

If you're trying to add a network printer at the office, you'll usually need the name of the printer. If you can't find it, contact your network administrator.

Click the Start button, and then, on the Start menu, click Devices and Printers .

In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer .

In the list of available printers, select the one you want to use, and then click Next . (If your computer is connected to a network, only printers listed in Active Directory for your domain are displayed in the list.)

Tip: Available printers can include all printers on a network, such as Bluetooth and wireless printers or printers that are plugged into another computer and shared on the network. You might need permission to install some printers. You can confirm the printer is working by printing a test page.

Note: After your printer is installed, you can keep it up to date with automatic Windows 7 driver updates.

Troubleshoot printer problems

Start by checking your hardware.

Make sure that the printer's electrical cord is plugged into an electrical outlet and that the power switch is turned on. If you're printing to a shared printer or a printer on a network, make sure that all necessary computers and routers are turned on too. If your printer or other equipment is plugged in to a surge protector or a backup power supply, make sure that hardware is plugged in and turned on as well.

If you’re using a wired printer, make sure that the printer cable is properly connected from the printer to your PC.

For wireless printers, check the wireless connection. Make sure the printer’s wireless option is turned on and available. Many printers have a button that displays a blue wireless icon when wireless is available.

Next, run the printer’s wireless connectivity test. Read the instructions that came with the printer or check the printer manufacturer’s website for instructions about how to do this.

If your printer's status displays "Printer in error state," there may be a problem with the printer itself. If the previous steps did not resolve the error, check the printer for low paper or ink, and be sure the cover isn't open and the paper isn't jammed.

Use a troubleshooter

A troubleshooter is an automated tool that can find and automatically fix some problems with your PC. The printing troubleshooter can fix problems with installing and connecting to a printer.

Update drivers

Most printers require driver software to work properly. If you recently upgraded from one version of Windows to another, it's possible that the current printer driver is for the previous version of Windows. If you've had recent power outages, viruses, or other computer problems, it's possible that the drivers have become damaged. Downloading and installing the latest driver for your printer can resolve these types of problems.

Three ways to find and install a driver:

Use Windows Update. Windows Update might have an updated version of your printer driver.

Install software from the printer manufacturer. If your printer came with a disc, that disc might contain software that installs a driver for the printer.

Download and install the driver yourself . You can search for a driver on the manufacturer's website. Try this if Windows Update can't find a driver for your printer, and the printer didn't come with software that installs a driver.

Support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020. Technical assistance and software updates from Windows Update that help protect your PC are no longer available for Windows 7. Microsoft strongly recommends that you move to Windows 11.
