How to Use Excel Free Project Timeline Templates

If you’re working on a team project, the last thing you want to do is constantly email everyone to find out how their tasks are going. Plus, you’ll need to keep everyone posted on the team’s progress at large. Something visual that the whole team can access quickly and easily, so as not to interrupt anyone’s workflow, is a must. That’s where free project timeline templates come in.
What Is a Project Timeline Template?
Having a visual project timeline that displays individual tasks, milestones and due dates, can help everyone involved in the project keep track of the team’s progress. It’s also a great way to keep everyone on track when it comes to due dates. Project timeline templates can also track which team members are responsible for various tasks, phases or milestones.
As a visual tool, it’s easy to use, too. A project timeline maps out the tasks the team needs to complete before starting a new task. This helps to ensure that nothing crucial to the project’s completion is forgotten.
Why Is Having a Project Timeline Template Important?
A visual project timeline template reduces the need for managers to hold meetings or send emails about project updates. Instead of checking in with everyone individually, each team member’s progress and tasks are easily viewable. With this time saved, meetings can be better spent actually working on the project at hand.
Additionally, team members don’t have to take the time to message one another. The visual project timeline serves as a quick reference. That way, everyone can stay focused on their tasks, instead of interrupting each other’s workflows to check in.
How To Create Free Project Timeline Templates
There are a few ways to create free project timeline templates. The website ProjectManager makes creating a free project timeline template easy. With five views for your projects — sheet, calendar, task list, Gantt, or kanban board — ProjectManager takes just a few minutes to use. Later, you can even export the timeline to Excel or Sheets if needed.
Another solid website is OfficeTimeline , which offers free project timeline templates that you can customize and edit to suit your needs and preferences.
How To Create Free Project Timeline Templates in Excel
Excel has a template for nearly everything you can think of, and free project timeline templates are no exception. Easy to use, Excel boasts template options for Gantt project charts, project trackers, work plan timelines and more.
There are a few ways to create free project timeline templates in Excel without searching for one online. If you choose the work plan timeline option, the work plan tab has columns for Phase 1 to Phase 4, meaning you can list out the tasks and anticipated outcomes or benchmarks for each phase.
The project tracker option has columns to illustrate the project name, category, the team member assigned to each task, estimated start and finish dates, actual start and finish dates, completion percentage and more.
Other Ways to Make Free Project Timeline Templates
If the templates you find online don’t fit the needs of your project, you can always take the time to create a template yourself. Whether you use Google Sheets, Zoho, or some other online spreadsheet, make sure it has the necessary options and tools you need to create your desired template, such as checkboxes, dropdown boxes and so on.
Remember: For efficiency, be sure to set up formulas so that when you change information in one cell that information, when shown elsewhere, automatically updates, too.

Canva is a fully functional graphic design tool that allows you to create invitations, flyers, social media graphics, and more, all in one platform. To make designing even easier regardless of your skill level, Canva gives you access to a range of design templates and the option to create and customize your own.
Use and Customize a Canva Template
The Canva Home screen shows you all of your designs from the past, designs shared with you, and access to the Trash for deleting old designs you no longer need. Also on the Home page, you'll find all of the available Canva templates for creating new designs.
To get started with Canva, you'll first need to sign up for a free account. Once you log in, you'll see your Home screen, full of interesting and useful templates to choose from.
To get started, use the template slider to scroll through the available templates until you find one that fits your design needs. Or, to search for a template, use the search bar located at the top of your Home page.
Once you locate a template you wish to use, select it to open the design screen.
To truly personalize your design, select Custom Dimensions , located on the left side of the Home screen, to choose your own width and height for your design.
From here, you can get started customizing and creating. On the left side of your screen, select Templates . You'll see a menu of other design templates you can choose from to jumpstart your design. To use one of these options, drag-and-drop it onto your blank template.
To change any of the elements in the design, simply select them to open the toolbar at the top of your design screen. You can delete elements, change their color, font, etc.
Once you're satisfied with your design, either download it or select Home in the upper left corner of your screen to navigate back to your Home page.
Create Your Own Canva Design Templates
There are many reasons why you might want to consider creating your own Canva design templates. For example, it's helpful to have a template when you want to create a social media post each week instead of recreating it each time. Or, you might want to create different versions of your logo for later use.
Whatever the case may be, before you create your own templates from an existing design, you'll need to create a Canva folder to store them in.
To create your Canva folder, navigate to the Home screen and select Folders from the menu on the left.
Next, select Create New on the far right side of your screen. Enter a folder name and choose whether or not you want to share your folder with anyone else.
Give your folder a specific name that's easy to understand to keep your designs organized. You can even create multiple folders for different templates such as "Social Media Templates" or "Blog Templates".
Select Create Folder . This will open your new folder and show you a list of all your folders on the left side of your screen.
Decided you want to share your template folder with others after all? Select Share , located in the top right of your folder's main screen.
Locate the design you wish to use as a future template from your list on the Home page, then drag-and-drop it into the folder on the left side of your screen. Open your new folder and your design will be there, ready to go.
You can also select the ellipses on your design, then select Move to Folder .
When you're ready to create a template from the design, select it to open the design's info window. On the right side, select Use As Template and Canva will open the design as a copy. You can now make any necessary changes.
Make sure to rename your new design. Select the field to the right of Upgrade in the toolbar at the top of the design screen.
Make a Simple Copy of a Canva Design
If you simply wish to copy an existing design without creating a template, it's easy to do from the Home screen.
Locate the design you wish to copy, select the ellipses in the corner of the image, then select Make a Copy . Canva will duplicate the design without opening a new design screen.

Description
The Business Model Canvas Template Excel is a spreadsheet template that can help you design your business model canvas with ease.
The Business Model Canvas is likely to be the most well-known and used business modelling system in the world. This tool was developed by Alexander Osterwalder , in his book entitled Business Model Generation.
It is user-friendly and different from everything that had been previously proposed, because it dispenses pages and pages of explanations and, on the other hand, focuses the attention of interested parties on a single canvas.
This blank canvas is divided graphically into nine building blocks, which must be filled in as follows:
- Customer Segments : you should start filling out your Business Model Canvas here. That’s because it’s easier to design your business when you already know who you’re selling to. Try to answer as briefly as possible to the question: “Who is my primary customer?” or “What kind of customer can I generate value for”?
- Value Propositions : having defined who your audience is, in the first block, you must now think about what needs of those people your product can meet. Ask yourself “What value do I deliver to my consumer?” Basically, try to highlight what differentiates your product or service from the competition.
- Channels : the question here is “What are the best ways for me to reach my customer?”. List, in this block, all the ways through which your business can deliver value to your customer, whether sales channels, distribution or even communication and marketing.
- Customer Relationships : the purpose of this block is to bring together all the service, communication and after-sales strategies that your business will use to create a relationship with the customer, in order to guarantee the retention of your audience, preventing them from migrating to the competition.
- Revenue Streams : “How and how much will my customer pay for the value proposition I will be delivering?” This block outlines how your business will make money. You can have more than one revenue stream also, and it is important that all of them are included here. For example, sales, subscription, licensing, etc.
- Key Resources : to fill this block, you first need to ask yourself “What resources are essential for my business to be able to deliver value to the customer?”. Then, you must also include the necessary resources to keep your channels and relationship strategies working. In short, they are all fundamental assets for the maintenance of the business, such as software, human resources, machines, among others.
- Key Activities : the purpose of this building block is very similar to the previous one. Indicate here all the essential activities for your business to work out and deliver value to the customer. They can be development and maintenance of technologies, production line, logistics and distribution etc.
- Key Partners : inform in this block who your business partners are, observing the motivation of each one, whether they are suppliers, service providers, outsourced companies, among others.
- Cost Structure : it is interesting to let this as the last block of the Business Model Canvas to be completed. By doing so, you will have already defined what the main activities and resources are so that your business can deliver value to the customer. Therefore, you will be able to define the costs that these and the other blocks may involve and, thus, explain them finally.
Notice that, using the Business Model Canvas Template Excel for designing your business model , you and your team will be able to view the business as a whole, on a unique screen. Thus, it is easy to observe each of its essential aspects and how they relate to each other.

Business Model Canvas Template

Organize your business model with this Business Model Canvas template, based on the theories of Alexander Osterwalder. Get a high-level analysis of a business in minutes by using the labeled cells to log details like Key Partners, Value Propositions, Revenue Streams, and the rest of the 9 key building blocks.
Once you do, you'll have all the most important parts of your business visually represented on a simple canvas.
What is a business model canvas template?
The business model canvas is Osterwalder's famous method of representing the 9 key elements of your business. Although, if you haven't heard of him, you may be thinking he's not that famous. Then again, you found this page, so clearly his method is at least reasonably famous.
Regardless, Swiss entrepreneur Alexander Osterwalder wrote a lot about business model design, and created the business model canvas template, which allowed businesses to easily describe and understand their business by breaking it down into key building blocks. In his co-written 2010 book, "Business Model Generation", he identified nine key building blocks: Value Proposition, Customer Segments, Channels, Customer Relationships, Revenue Streams, Cost Structure, Key Resources, Key Activities, and Key Partnerships.
If you understand all that, you understand your business. If you don't understand it, we'll explain it more below. Either way, having a template that lets you easily understand and explain your business to stakeholders is valuable.
Did you know?
Although the business model canvas template refers to key resources, key activities, and key partnerships, it is also very relevant even for businesses that don't sell keys.
Osterwalder's co-author for his book "Business Model Generation" was named Yves Pigneur, which is an anagram of "Rupees Vying". Alexander Osterwalder is an anagram of "Exalted Narrow Leaders". These are approved names for international experts on business.
Compared to modeling for canvas in the art world, a business model canvas template offers many advantages, such as being more lucrative if successful, and getting to keep your pants on.
How does it work?
The business canvas model template covers the 9 key building blocks of a business, so your job is simply to fill in each one to better understand your business:
Customer Segments: The people or organizations for whom you are creating value. Who are your users and customers?
Value Proposition: The value you offer to those customer segments. This includes the products and services you offer to each customer segment, but also the customer needs you are helping to address. Why would a customer choose you?
Channels: The bridge through which you connect the customer with the value. How do you reach your customers? Is it how they want to be reached?
Customer Relationships: The relationships you build with your customers. What types of relationships are these? What types of relationships do your customers want?
Revenue Streams: How does this all make money? What are your customers actually willing to pay for?
Key Resources: What resources do you need to deliver the value to the customers and collect revenue? Resources here include everything from money and factories to well-trained staff.
Key Activities: What activities do you need to be doing in order to deliver the value to the customers and collect revenue?
Key Partnerships: What key partnerships does your company have? What do you get out of those partnerships?
Cost Structure: Are we aiming to minimize cost or maximize value? What costs are the unavoidable key resources and activities we need? What other costs do we have, and should we reconsider the most expensive ones? Once you've filled in all nine segments of this business model canvas template, you'll have a clearer view of exactly how your business works.
Why do I need a business model canvas template?
Do you understand all the most important parts of your business implicitly? Can you explain them explicitly -- which means in detail, not just with swearing -- to yourself, your employees, and your investors, in a matter of minutes? Do you have a clear picture of exactly how all the parts of your business connect, and what things you could improve to improve your business?
A business model canvas template helps you do all of those things, by mapping out the strategy of your whole business in a single visual overview. The nine building blocks are broken down into three general categories:
Desirability (Do customers want the thing we're offering in the way we're offering it?) Feasibility (Are we capable of actually delivering the thing to the customers?) Viability (How does it make money?)
You need all three to have a successful business. Merely having a desirable product isn't enough. To understand the overarching strategy of a business, you need all three categories. You need to understand the value of the product, who will buy it, how you'll get it to them, how you'll keep things running, and how all of the aforementioned makes money.
That may sound complex. But a business model canvas simplifies it, gathering all of that information into one easily-digestible spreadsheet that you can use to quickly explain the fundamentals of your business, whether "your business" refers to an idea that you're developing and planning to start soon, or a company you've been running for 20 years.
Who benefits from business model canvas templates?
Anyone who wants to understand how a certain business actually works.
If you're a senior executive trying to communicate your business model to an audience without an endless attention span, this template will help you visualize the story of your business.
If you're a product manager trying to get some key ideas across during the product development process, this template helps you frame the conversation and lay out the fundamentals for the product.
If you're an entrepreneur planning to found a new business, this template will let you explore new business models to compare and contrast them. And then once you're settled on a model, this same template can serve as the basis for a slightly-more-comprehensive elevator pitch to investors. Maybe an escalator pitch?
In short, if you have or plan to have a business, you can benefit from a business canvas model that pushes you to map out how your business actually works.

TEMPLATE DESCRIPTION
Having a clear picture of business components is very important to obtain a visual snapshot of an organization. In doing so, a Business Model Canvas Excel (BMC) template will assist you in summarizing, designing, and analyzing your company’s strategic plan . Therefore we have prepared this Excel tool serving as a one-page lean canvas model.
The original model developed by Alexander Osterwalder, claims that each business may be explained in nine main blocks: Key Partners, Key Activities, Key Resources, Value Propositions, Customer Relations, Channels, Customer Segments, Cost Structure, Revenue Streams. With this lean canvas , you can use these nine blocks or create your own!

Business Model Canvas Excel Template Features
Designed to visualize your business components, our Business Model Canvas has two options:
- Dynamic Canvas
- Blank Canvas
Both sections will be further explained below.
1. Dynamic Canvas
The Dynamic Canvas of the Excel template contains two parts: a list for your notes and the canvas itself.
The section is where you take your notes and post them on the canvas. Firstly, you will write down your notes into the input table on the left side of the sheet. After that, just select the post-it color from the dropdown menu. Following these, the note is applied to the canvas in the chosen color.

All the notes will automatically appear on the canvas. For instance, the only thing you will be doing is to select the block name for each note from the dropdown menu. It’s that simple!
In addition, you can write your company name and date on the canvas, as well as any general notes. According to the principles of the Business Model Canvas (BMC) , there are nine pre-defined block category names. However, you can rename these blocks by simply retyping them.

2. Blank Canvas
Blank canvas is the drag&drop section of the Business Model Canvas Template. It allows you to flexibly design your note style. Firstly, you can choose any post-it from the palette on the right side of the sheet and drag it to your desired location on the canvas. After that, you can include any information by manually writing it down on the post-it.

In addition, using the shape format tab, you may customize your notes with different colors, fonts, outlines, and other aspect options from the shape format tab. Furthermore, you may also re-size them according to your needs.
Business Model Canvas Main Categories
The nine categories in the business model canvas template are shortly explained below:
- Key Partners: Include your most important complementary business alliances in terms of buyer-supplier relationships and/or other strategic alliances between competitors or non-competitors.
- Key Activities: Decide the most important activities in your value proposition.
- Key Resources: List the key resources necessary to create value for your customers. These may be human, financial, physical, or intellectual resources.
- Value Propositions: Describe the products and services that you offer to meet the customers’ needs. Your value propositions may be quantitative or qualitative.
- Customer Relations: Specify the critical steps and elements for your customer relationship strategy.
- Channels: Mention the distribution channels that you use to deliver your value propositions to the targeted customers. These may include your own channels, partner channels, or a combination of both.
- Customer Segments: Explain the customer groups that you aim to serve. You can segment your customers into various sets based on their different needs and attributes.
- Cost Structure: Define your cost structure with the most important monetary costs you have while operating.
- Revenue Streams: List your way to make income from each customer segment.

Tips On Using These Business Plan Templates
An idiot with a plan can beat a genius without a plan. Warren Buffet
Create a powerful business plan and it will convince others to either invest in you or become part of your business.
A tight business plan will separate you from the pack and deliver a competitive advantage.
How To Use These Business Model Templates

A business model innovation has a higher potential to deliver an innovation advantage than having a unique product or service. Products and services are easy to copy whereas a business model is embedded in the DNA of the business and the way it works.
Here are a few tips when you plan your business using these business model templates.
- Jot down your ideas – all your ideas without evaluating them first.
- Group them – group ideas into themes.
- Evaluate each group – evaluate each group and discard duplicates or ones that are similar. At this stage, you don’t want to limit the possibilities too early.
- Gather your data – pool all the data you have currently on your ideal customer and identify any gaps in data that are important.
- Invest time/money (dependent on budget) in trying to bridge the data gaps – use online reports, surveys, observations – a mix of data.
- Value proposition canvas – start with the value proposition template to get into the detail of the jobs, gains and pains of your customer.
- Move to the business model or lean startup canvas – use your ideas to create the business model.
- Check your business model vs competitors – what can you do differently better than competitors.
- Create a strategy – a business plan is not a strategy. A strategy evaluates your capabilities and ideas vs the market and trends.
- Research the trends and use supporting data to clarify if you have a strong or weak strategy.

How does the Canvas model generate the result for my organization?
Canvas is used to build a business model, which can be used to create a new organization or revise the existing model in a mature company. In the Excel Canvas model, you easily record the proposed idea and identify the variables that influence the business.

Business Plan x Canvas Model
In the past, the possibility of starting a company was usually conditioned by extensive research, summarized in a business plan that could exceed a hundred pages. The Canvas model created in the 2000s by Swiss consultant Alex Osterwalder, enabled the essence of the business proposal to be compiled into a single page so that it can be validated with real customers before receiving major investments, which means discovering the MVP – Minimum Viable Product.
The following aspects will be developed in your Canvas model:
- Partners: main partners, including suppliers.
- Activities: key activity required by the value proposition.
- Resources: key resources to generate value.
- Value Proposal: the real problem the offered solution solves.
- Customer Relationship: type of relationship and segments.
- Channels: channels that reach the target audience.
- Customer Segment: the most important audience for which value is generated.
- Cost Structure: cost of the business model and more costly resources and activities.
- Revenue Flow: the amount currently paid by the public and how much it intends to pay.

What Is a Business Model Canvas?
A business model canvas is a strategic management document that assists you in developing business models of all kinds, from lean to startup to subscription models. It is a purely visual chart that identifies and describes core business elements, like value propositions, market segments, and customers.
What Is a Business Model Canvas Used For?
Typically a one-page document, a business model canvas grants a high-level overview of the business structure and operation and describes the overall value of an organization. Not only is it a strategic tool for developing a new business, but it’s also a way to upgrade or analyze an already-active business. A business model canvas brings clarity, strategy, and simplicity to a business plan, especially regarding areas that are usually difficult to describe.
Why Is a Business Model Canvas Important?
A business model canvas is important because it helps provide a company with clarity, focus, and strategy. It offers a detailed structure of what the business does, how it should perform, and what markets or customer groups it should target.
What a Business Model Canvas Can Help an Organization Do
A business model canvas not only increases the transparency of the business plan by supplying a single, flexible explanation of the business and its strategy, but also helps a business or organization to do the following:
Describe, design, or redesign a business model
Organize new thoughts and ideas about how a business can increase its success
Enable both new and existing organizations to increase their focus on the operations and processes that run their business
Provide a platform to explore new options for a business, test any assumptions, and discover new opportunities
Devise new strategies for a business
Look at a business with a critical eye, identifying areas of improvement or areas of great success
Reevaluate any unique aspects of a business that are working and fine tune those aspects in order to improve an overall business strategy
Discover opportunities to grow or improve upon existing processes
Provide either a general guideline or a detailed layout of a business, depending on its structure
Identify specific instructions on how to achieve a new or improved business plan
Assess potential trade-off opportunities
Align marketing strategies and other business activities
Enable a structured conversation about a business model and an operation and management strategy that can include stakeholders, key team members, and external resources
Present strategic analyses, like a market analysis, customer analysis, or operational analysis
Develop new insight on customers and what they are seeking from a business
Describe the relationships between new initiatives and how a company can achieve those initiatives simultaneously
Who Created the Business Model Canvas?
Business theorist Alexander Osterwalder created the business model canvas following his earlier work on business model ontology.
The Core Structures of Business Models
Based on his analysis, Osterwalder proposed that all businesses share similar modeling, using the following core structures:
Infrastructure : This includes key business activities, key resources, and key partners that the business leverages on a regular basis.
Offering : The concept of offering deals with the unique value proposition of a business, which is what distinguishes one business from another.
Customers : This includes customer segments, channels, and customer relationships, all of which drive the strategy and overall success of a business.
Finances : Finances include both the cost structure and the revenue streams that drive the profit of a business.
When Was the Business Model Canvas Invented?
Alexander Osterwalder invented the business model canvas in 2008, following his work on business model ontology. Since 2008, business experts have created many variations on Osterwalder’s original business model canvas, including ones that are industry specific.
What Do You Include in a Business Model Canvas Template?
A business model canvas has a few main components that build out the structure, organization, and strategy of a business. The components include the following:
Key Activities : The key activities identify the crucial steps and activities a business must perform in order to deliver on its propositions and continue to succeed. As a business changes and grows, it must discover new techniques to perform better, provide better services or products, and consider how these key activities help to drive the value proposition.
Key Resources/Partners : The key resources delineate the strategic assets needed to achieve core business goals and maintain a more targeted and successful approach than one’s competitors. Three core business products make up the key resources: product, scope, and infrastructure.
Value Proposition : This is the driving force of the business, as it identifies the uniqueness of a business’s offering (i.e., what differentiates it from other competitors). The value prop works to pinpoint the needs of the customer and deliver on those needs with the company’s own product or service.
Channels : The channels signify the various media used to communicate the value prop to the appropriate customers. Channels also identify where and how you will sell your product and to what customers.
Customer Segments : This refers to the way in which customers interact with the business through the product or service lifecycle and which type of market a customer might engage with. Types of markets can include niche, mass, segmented, diversified, or multi-sided.
Cost Structure : The cost structure of a business model canvas pairs together how key activities will drive costs and determines how well the costs are aligned with the value prop. It is at this time that businesses must determine other key cost decisions, like using a fixed, variable, cost-driven, or value-driven structure and figuring out how the scope and scale of the business relate to the costs and revenue.
Revenue Streams : This determines the way a company generates revenue from each customer segment. Revenue streams can come in the form of asset sales, usage or subscription fees, lending, leasing, renting, licensing, brokerage fees, and advertising. A business determines its revenue streams based on its overall structure.
What Is a Business Model Canvas Report?
A business model canvas report is a roll-up of all the key details described in a business model canvas. The report aims to describe each component in further detail, providing commentary on both why a company is structured the way it is and how it plans to attain that structure.
What Is a Lean Canvas Template?
A lean canvas template is a one-page business plan that summarizes a business and breaks it down into nine key elements. Those elements include problems, solutions, key metrics, value propositions, advantages, channels, customer segments, cost structures, and revenue streams.
Why Have a Business Model Canvas?
Businesses and organizations should have a business model canvas in order to break down the key components of a business and discuss what is and isn’t working. This process will help you identify problem areas, improve on certain aspects, and continue to grow, generate revenue, and succeed.
Tips For Creating a Business Model Canvas
The best way to get started is by gathering a core group comprised of key team members and stakeholders (ideally around 3-5 people) and drawing out a canvas on paper or creating a canvas digitally.
Allow yourself plenty of undisturbed time to start mapping out a high-level overview of the business and its structure. Connect the core building blocks of your business, like market segments and target customers, and brainstorm how to achieve the most success.
Make sure to keep on open mind and separate the current from the ideal state of the business. After you have completed your canvas, review it and share it with your team to collect further ideas or comments. Ask team members to look for missing details, both in the design and structure of the canvas.
Once you have completed the canvas review, test your new plan and analyze it periodically to ensure it is working for your business.
